Day 1: Arrive Manaus — Heart of the Amazon

Touch down in Manaus, a city of 2.2 million in the middle of the world’s largest rainforest. Manaus was once one of the richest cities in the world during the rubber boom (1879-1912), when “rubber barons” built the Teatro Amazonas opera house (1896) from imported European materials — Carrara marble from Italy, ironwork from Glasgow, crystal chandeliers from Murano, and 198 chandeliers for a total cost equivalent to $250 million today. Afternoon: visit the Teatro Amazonas, the surreal symbol of rubber-boom excess, and the bustling Mercado Municipal, a cast-iron market hall designed by Gustave Eiffel. Transfer to your jungle lodge 2 hours up the Rio Negro by speedboat. The Rio Negro is the world’s largest blackwater river — its tea-colored water (pH 3.8-4.9) is so acidic that mosquitoes cannot breed in it. Welcome caipirinha and dinner at the lodge. Day 2: Meeting of the Waters & January Lake

Morning boat trip to the Encontro das Aguas (Meeting of the Waters), one of the world’s most extraordinary hydrological phenomena. Here, the dark Rio Negro and the sandy-colored Rio Solimoes flow side by side for 6km without mixing — the visible boundary line is razor-sharp. The difference is dramatic: the Negro is 28°C and acidic (pH 3.8), flowing at 2 km/h, while the Solimoes is 22°C and neutral (pH 7.0), flowing at 6 km/h. Afternoon: visit Lago January, an ecological park of floating walkways through the igapo (seasonally flooded forest). During the high-water season (April-July), you can canoe through the treetops — an experience unique to the Amazon. Swim with pink river dolphins (botos) — the largest freshwater dolphin in the world, with fossil records dating back 15 million years. Legend says they transform into handsome men at night to seduce village women. Overnight jungle lodge.

Day 3: Jungle Survival & Piranha Fishing

Morning jungle trek with a local guide who will teach you fundamental rainforest survival skills: identifying edible fruits (acai, cupuacu, Brazil nuts), finding drinking water in lianas (woody vines that store liters of pure water), and recognizing medicinal plants. The guide will demonstrate how to build a simple shelter using palm fronds and vines — skills still used by ribeirinho (river-dwelling) communities. The Amazon is home to an estimated 40,000 plant species, 80,000 of which remain undocumented. Afternoon: piranha fishing from a dugout canoe — red-bellied piranhas are abundant and surprisingly tasty when grilled. Explore smaller igarapes (forest streams) by canoe, gliding silently under the canopy. Evening: caiman spotting — the guide will capture a small spectacled caiman for close observation before releasing it. Overnight jungle lodge.

Day 4: Indigenous Village & River Dolphins

Full-day excursion to an indigenous community on the Rio Negro. The Amazon basin is home to approximately 400 indigenous groups speaking 300 languages — more linguistic diversity than all of Europe. Visit a riverside village where traditions remain strong: learn about manioc processing (the staple crop, from which farinha — toasted flour — is made), observe traditional fishing techniques, and participate in a cultural exchange. The community’s shaman may demonstrate rituals using ayahuasca-related plants (observation only). Afternoon: more dolphin interaction — the boto populations here are habituated to humans and incredibly gentle. The pink color intensifies with the dolphin’s excitement, caused by blood capillaries near the skin surface. Overnight jungle lodge.

Day 5: Anavilhanas Archipelago — World’s Largest River Archipelago

Full-day expedition into Anavilhanas National Park, a maze of 400+ islands stretching 130km along the Rio Negro — the world’s largest freshwater archipelago. During high water, half these islands disappear; during low water, white-sand beaches emerge. Cruise the labyrinth of channels where every turn reveals new wildlife: squirrel monkeys leaping between branches, toucans flying overhead, and the prehistoric-looking green iguana (up to 2m long) sunning on branches. Stop at a pristine white-sand beach (low water season) for swimming in the dark but crystal-clear Rio Negro waters. The silence here, broken only by the call of howler monkeys and the splash of river dolphins, is profound. Overnight jungle lodge.

Day 6: Sunrise Birdwatching & Canopy Walk

4:30 AM: dawn birdwatching by boat — the Amazon sunrise chorus is one of nature’s great symphonies, with toucans, parrots, macaws, oropendolas, and the haunting cry of the screaming piha (often used in jungle movie soundtracks). After breakfast: visit a canopy walkway or observation tower (30m) for the treetop perspective. Here you’re in the world of harpy eagles (the Amazon’s top avian predator, with a 2m wingspan), three-toed sloths, and howler monkeys — whose roar, amplified by an enlarged hyoid bone, can be heard 5km away. Afternoon: optional handicraft workshop — learn to make traditional jewelry from seeds and fibers. Farewell dinner: a festive meal featuring tambaqui (the giant Amazon fruit-eating fish, grilled with local spices) and tucupi sauce (fermented manioc juice). Overnight jungle lodge.

Day 7: Depart Manaus

Final morning in the jungle — one last swim in the Rio Negro or a short canoe paddle. Speedboat transfer back to Manaus. Visit the MUSA (Museum of the Amazon) with its innovative exhibits on Amazonian ecology, or the INPA science museum with preserved Amazon manatees. Transfer to Manaus Airport.
