Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Bujumbura — On the Shores of Lake Tanganyika

Arrive at Bujumbura International Airport. Burundi sits on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, the world’s longest freshwater lake (676km) and second-deepest (1,470m). Bujumbura, the economic capital, is a lakeside city with French colonial architecture and a relaxed atmosphere. Check into your hotel. Evening: walk along the lakefront promenade — fishermen in wooden boats, the Ruzizi River delta in the distance, and the Congo mountains on the far shore. Overnight at City Hill Hotel Bujumbura.

Day 2: Gishora Sacred Drums & Gitega Royal Heritage

Drive 2 hours to Gishora, a hilltop site sacred to Burundi’s most famous cultural tradition: the ritual drumming of the Batimbo. Burundian drumming, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, is not music for entertainment — it was historically the exclusive domain of royal court drummers who communicated with the king through complex rhythms. Watch a performance by drummers in traditional red-and-white robes around the sacred drums Ruciteme (“for whom we cut”) and Murimirwa (“for whom we cultivate”). The synchronized drumming, leaps, and chants create a visceral experience that few travelers witness. Continue to Gitega, Burundi’s cultural heart, to visit the National Museum with its collection of royal artifacts, traditional pottery, and the reconstructed royal court. Overnight in Gitega.

Day 3: Karera Waterfalls — Burundi’s Hidden Cascade

Morning drive to Karera Falls in Rutana Province. The waterfall cascades over five tiers of dark volcanic rock into a lush gorge — at its most dramatic during the rainy season (February-May), but impressive year-round. The area is undeveloped and the approach is through small villages where children will greet you with delighted curiosity — this is tourism as it existed decades ago, before infrastructure and crowds. Afternoon: visit the Mugara hot springs on the shores of Lake Tanganyika — naturally heated mineral water flows into pools where locals and visitors soak. Overnight in Bujumbura.

Day 4: Rusizi National Park — Hippo Country

Morning boat safari on the Rusizi River through Rusizi National Park. The river forms the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the density of hippos here is extraordinary — pods of 20-30 animals wallow in the channels, their grunts echoing across the water. Crocodiles sunbathe on sandbanks, and the birdlife includes kingfishers, fish eagles, and the bizarre shoebill stork (sporadic). The floodplain is also home to sitatunga antelope and occasional hippo vs. crocodile standoffs. Afternoon: visit the Livingstone-Stanley Monument, a rock 10km south of Bujumbura where explorer Henry Morton Stanley and missionary David Livingstone allegedly met in 1871. The inscription reads “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” — the most famous greeting in exploration history. Evening: sunset dhow cruise on Lake Tanganyika. Overnight in Bujumbura.

Day 5: Bujumbura & Depart

Morning at the Bujumbura Central Market — mounds of mangoes, fresh fish from Lake Tanganyika, colorful kitenge fabrics, and Burundian coffee (some of Africa’s finest). Visit the Explorers Memorial. Transfer to airport.
