Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Kathmandu & Fly to Pokhara
Morning flight (25 min) from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Nepal’s second city on the shores of Phewa Lake. Afternoon boat ride on the lake with the Annapurna range reflected in still water. Overnight in Pokhara.
Day 2: Pokhara to Ulleri (1,960m) — 3,381 Steps
Drive to Nayapul and begin trekking. The highlight — or challenge — of this day is the famous stone staircase: 3,381 steps climbing through terraced fields and Gurung villages to Ulleri. Stop frequently, drink water, and chat with villagers carrying baskets of supplies to mountain teahouses. Overnight in Ulleri.
Day 3: Ulleri to Ghorepani (2,860m)
Trek through magnificent rhododendron forests. If you’re trekking in March-April, the forests are a riot of red, pink, and white blossoms — Nepal’s national flower in full bloom. Ghorepani means “horse water” — this was a watering stop on the ancient salt trade route between Tibet and India. Overnight in Ghorepani.
Day 4: Poon Hill Sunrise — The Money Shot
Rise at 4:30am and climb 45 minutes by headlamp to Poon Hill (3,210m). The reward: sunrise over Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Machhapuchhre/Fishtail (6,993m), and a dozen other peaks — a 270-degree panorama of the entire Annapurna Range catching the first light. The mountains turn from black silhouettes to pink, then gold, in about 15 minutes of pure Himalayan magic. After the sunrise, descend to Tadapani through more rhododendron forest. Overnight in Tadapani.
Day 5: Tadapani to Ghandruk
A beautiful descent day with constant mountain views. Arrive at Ghandruk, the largest Gurung village in the Annapurna region — stone houses with slate roofs, narrow lanes, and a fascinating Gurung Culture Museum. The Gurung people are legendary Gurkha soldiers; many village homes display photos of sons and fathers in British Army uniforms. Overnight in Ghandruk.
Day 6: Ghandruk to Pokhara
Final descent through terraced fields, past waterfalls, to the valley floor. Drive to Pokhara. Afternoon: visit the World Peace Pagoda for sunset over Phewa Lake — a much-appreciated change of perspective after a week on the trail. Celebratory dinner in Lakeside. Overnight in Pokhara.
Day 7: Pokhara to Kathmandu & Depart
Morning flight to Kathmandu. Transfer to international airport or free time in Thamel.
