Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Ponta Delgada
Arrival and orientation walk. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.
Day 2: Ribeira Funda to Maia Coastal Trail
Spectacular coastal hike along São Miguel’s dramatic north shore. Start in Ribeira Funda and follow an ancient footpath carved into volcanic cliffs. Pass waterfalls tumbling directly into the Atlantic and sea stacks rising from turquoise waters. The trail offers constant ocean views and likely dolphin sightings offshore. Finish in the picturesque village of Maia. Distance: 12km. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.
Day 3: Lagoa do Fogo Summit
Climb to São Miguel’s highest lake at 949m. The trail ascends through dense cryptomeria forest, emerging onto a high plateau with views of the pristine crater lake. Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake) fills the youngest volcanic caldera on the island, formed just 15,000 years ago. The lake’s turquoise waters and unspoiled shores — completely free of development — make it one of the wildest spots in the Azores. Distance: 14km. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.
Day 4: Terceira Island — Mistérios Negros Trail
Short flight to Terceira. Hike the Mistérios Negros (Black Mysteries) trail, named for the dark lava fields that cover much of the island’s interior. The route passes through endemic Laurissilva forest patches and offers views of the Serra de Santa Bárbara, the island’s highest point. Afternoon: explore Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Overnight in Angra do Heroísmo.
Day 5: Algar do Carvão & Furnas do Enxofre
Descend 90 meters into Algar do Carvão, an empty volcanic chimney with a crystal-clear lake at the bottom — one of the few places on Earth you can walk inside a volcano’s throat. Continue to Furnas do Enxofre to walk among steaming fumaroles and sulfur deposits. Afternoon hike through the interior pastureland of Serra do Cume to the iconic checkerboard viewpoint — countless small fields in every shade of green, separated by dark volcanic stone walls. Farewell dinner featuring Terceira’s famous alcatra. Overnight in Angra do Heroísmo.
Day 6: Depart via Terceira
Transfer to airport.
