Day 1: Arrive Ponta Delgada

Land at João Paulo II Airport on São Miguel, the largest Azorean island known as “Ilha Verde” (Green Island). Transfer to your 4-star hotel in Ponta Delgada, the archipelago’s charming capital of black-and-white basalt architecture. Evening orientation walk along the seaside promenade. Welcome dinner featuring cozido das Furnas — a traditional stew slow-cooked underground by volcanic heat. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.

Day 2: Sete Cidades — The Twin Lakes

Drive west to Sete Cidades, the Azores’ most iconic landscape: a massive volcanic crater holding two lakes — Lagoa Azul (Blue) and Lagoa Verde (Green) — separated by a narrow bridge. Legend says they formed from the tears of a green-eyed princess and a blue-eyed shepherd boy. Walk the crater rim trail for panoramic views. Descend into the crater to visit the picturesque village of Sete Cidades, home to fewer than 800 people living inside a volcano. Afternoon: visit the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno viewpoint. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.

Day 3: Furnas — The Volcanic Kitchen

Full day in the Furnas Valley, a geothermal wonderland where the earth literally cooks your lunch. Visit the Caldeiras das Furnas where dozens of fumaroles and boiling mud pools hiss and bubble. Watch as cooks lower pots of cozido into holes in the ground at 6am — by lunchtime, the volcanic heat has slow-cooked the stew to perfection. Visit the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden, home to a giant thermal swimming pool (the color of mustard from iron-rich water) surrounded by 12 hectares of exotic gardens planted in 1780. Soak in the 40°C waters. Visit Furnas Lake and the Gothic-revival Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.

Day 4: Nordeste — The Wild East

Explore the stunning northeast coast, the most rugged and least-visited part of São Miguel. Drive the panoramic road from Ponta Delgada, stopping at the Salto do Prego waterfall trail through a fairy-tale forest. Visit the Ponta do Sossego viewpoint garden in Nordeste, where hydrangeas and agapanthus frame Atlantic views. Continue to the Ponta da Madrugada viewpoint for the best sunrise spot on the island. Stop at the Arnel Lighthouse, the oldest in the Azores (1876), perched on a dramatic cliff edge. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.

Day 5: Lagoa do Fogo & Whale Watching

Morning visit to Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake), a pristine crater lake in the center of São Miguel, surrounded by untouched native vegetation. The viewpoint offers one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the Azores, with the lake’s turquoise waters filling the volcanic caldera 575m above sea level. Afternoon: whale watching cruise. The Azores are one of the world’s top whale-watching destinations, with 28 cetacean species recorded including sperm whales, blue whales, and multiple dolphin species. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.

Day 6: Vila Franca do Campo & Islet

Morning visit to Vila Franca do Campo, the island’s first capital before a devastating 1522 earthquake. Visit the Queijadas da Vila factory to taste the island’s famous cheese tarts. Take a boat to the Ilhéu de Vila Franca, a submerged volcanic crater that forms a perfect natural swimming pool — a circular lagoon of crystal-clear water surrounded by basalt walls. This nature reserve is one of the most unique swimming spots on Earth. Farewell dinner featuring lapas grelhadas (grilled limpets) and fresh Azorean tuna. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.

Day 7: Depart Ponta Delgada

Morning visit to the Gorreana tea plantation (Europe’s only tea plantation, operating since 1883) for a tour and tasting. Transfer to airport.
