Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Djibouti City
Arrival and transfer. Afternoon city orientation: European Quarter, Central Market, Port area. Overnight at Djibouti City hotel.
Day 2: Lake Assal — Africa’s Lowest Point
4×4 expedition to spectacular Lake Assal. Walk across the vast salt flats, float in the hypersaline water, and meet Afar salt harvesters loading camel caravans. Visit the Goubet Gulf and its volcanic formations. Overnight at Djibouti City hotel.
Day 3: Lake Abbe & Alien Landscapes
Full-day journey to Lake Abbe’s limestone chimneys and geothermal vents. Explore Afar nomadic encampments. Sunset and dawn photography at this “Planet of the Apes” filming location. Overnight camping at Lake Abbe.
Day 4: Day Forest National Park & Bankoualé
Morning at Lake Abbe, then drive to Day Forest National Park in the Goda Mountains — one of East Africa’s last remnants of juniper forest. Visit the Bankoualé palm groves and meet the local Afar community. Afternoon drive to Tadjourah, one of Djibouti’s oldest towns with whitewashed buildings and a beautiful mosque facing the Gulf. Overnight at Tadjourah guesthouse.
Day 5: Tadjourah to Obock — Cross the Gulf
Morning exploration of Tadjourah: the Sultan’s Palace, Friday Mosque, and colourful market. Afternoon dhow ferry across the Gulf of Tadjourah to Obock, a historic port town that served as the French colonial gateway. Visit the Obock market known for Yemeni imports. Overnight at Obock guesthouse.
Day 6: Whale Shark Encounter & Moucha Island
Full-day marine excursion. Morning whale shark snorkeling in the Gulf of Tadjourah (November-February) — swim alongside these gentle 10-meter giants in waters rich with plankton. Continue to Moucha Island, a coral-ringed paradise with pristine beaches. Afternoon snorkeling on the Moucha reef, home to turtles, rays, and hundreds of tropical fish species. Beach barbecue lunch. Return to Djibouti City in the evening. Overnight at Djibouti City hotel.
Day 7: Grand Bara Desert & Arta Beach
Morning 4×4 drive across the Grand Bara Desert — 40km of flat, hard-packed sand perfect for high-speed driving. Visit the Arta region, home to the endangered Djibouti francolin bird. Afternoon at Arta Beach, a local weekend getaway with calm waters and views across the Gulf to Somalia. Farewell dinner at Djibouti’s finest French-African fusion restaurant. Overnight at Djibouti City hotel.
Day 8: Departure
Morning at leisure. Transfer to airport for departure. Option to combine with Somaliland, Ethiopia, or Eritrea.
