Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive N’Djamena — Fly to Zakouma
Arrive N’Djamena and transfer to charter flight to Zakouma National Park in southeastern Chad. Managed by African Parks since 2010, Zakouma represents one of Africa’s greatest wildlife conservation success stories — elephant poaching has been virtually eliminated and wildlife populations have rebounded spectacularly. Arrive at Tinga Camp. Afternoon game drive. Overnight at Tinga Camp.
Day 2-3: Zakouma — Elephant Herds & Predators
Full days on safari. Zakouma’s elephant population — once decimated by poaching — has stabilized at over 550 individuals and is now growing. Witness massive herds gathering at waterholes in the dry season. Look for West African lions (one of the last strongholds), leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas. Dawn and dusk game drives plus walking safaris with armed rangers.
Day 4: Zakouma — Birding Paradise & Rigueik Pan
Full day at Rigueik Pan, a vast floodplain attracting tens of thousands of waterbirds during the dry season. Zakouma is one of Africa’s premier birding destinations with over 380 species, including black-crowned cranes (the park’s emblem), Abyssinian rollers, and massive flocks of red-billed quelea (millions strong) that swirl like smoke across the sky.
Day 5: Zakouma — Flight to N’Djamena
Morning game drive and charter flight back to N’Djamena. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight in N’Djamena.
Day 6: N’Djamena Culture
Visit the National Museum with the 7-million-year-old Toumaï skull (Sahelanthropus tchadensis), the Grand Marché, and Gaoui village for traditional pottery. Farewell dinner.
Day 7: Depart Chad
Transfer to airport.
