Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Ouagadougou — Welcome to Ouaga

Arrive at Ouagadougou International Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Burkina Faso translates to “Land of the Upright People” and remains one of West Africa’s most culturally vibrant nations. Afternoon visit to the National Museum with its excellent collection of Mossi, Bobo, and Lobi artifacts. Evening: dinner at a maquis sampling Burkinabe cuisine — riz gras (rich rice dish) and poulet bicyclette (free-range chicken). Overnight in Ouagadougou.

Day 2: Ouagadougou — Cinema, Art & Mossi Culture

Full day in the capital. Morning: visit the Moro-Naba Palace, ceremonial seat of the Mossi Emperor (Mogho Naba). While the emperor no longer holds political power, the Friday morning ceremony with horse-mounted nobles in traditional regalia is one of West Africa’s most spectacular cultural events. Visit the African Cinema Museum — Burkina Faso is the home of FESPACO, Africa’s largest film festival. Afternoon: artisan village — bronze casting using ancient Mossi techniques, batik workshops, and Kôkô Dunda (traditional indigo dyeing). Overnight in Ouagadougou.

Day 3: Tiebele — The Painted Village

Day trip to Tiebele (3 hours south), home to the Kassena people and one of West Africa’s most extraordinary architectural sites. The Gourounsi compound houses are painted in striking geometric black, white, and ochre patterns — each design has symbolic meaning passed down through generations of women painters. The houses are built of earth and straw with fortified walls and low doorways designed for defense. Walk through this living UNESCO candidate site. Afternoon: visit a local school supported by community tourism. Overnight in Ouagadougou.

Day 4: Bobo-Dioulasso — Burkina’s Cultural Capital

Fly or drive to Bobo-Dioulasso (6-7 hours by road, 1 hour by air), Burkina Faso’s second city and cultural capital. Afternoon: visit the Grande Mosquée of Bobo-Dioulasso — built in 1880 entirely of mud brick with wooden support beams projecting from the walls, a stunning example of Sudano-Sahelian architecture. Visit the old Kibidwe district with its labyrinth of narrow streets and traditional family compounds. Evening: Bobo’s famous nightlife — live music venues where Burkinabe musicians play a fusion of traditional and modern styles. Overnight in Bobo-Dioulasso.

Day 5: Banfora — Cascades de Karfiguéla & Dômes de Fabedougou

Day trip to Banfora (1.5 hours). Morning: visit the Cascades de Karfiguéla — a series of waterfalls creating natural swimming pools surrounded by lush vegetation. Afternoon: the Dômes de Fabedougou — extraordinary sandstone formations eroded into mushroom shapes and domes by millennia of wind and rain. Visit Lake Tengrela, home to hippopotamuses — take a pirogue (traditional canoe) for close encounters. Return to Bobo-Dioulasso. Overnight in Bobo.

Day 6: Bobo-Dioulasso Mask Festival (timed departures) & Sacred Fish

If your visit coincides with a mask festival, witness one of West Africa’s most spectacular cultural events — dozens of masks from different ethnic groups performing simultaneously. Visit the Mare aux Poissons Sacrés (Sacred Fish Pond) where enormous catfish, protected by tradition for centuries, come to be fed. Afternoon: visit Bobo weavers creating traditional cotton cloth on narrow looms. Overnight in Bobo.

Day 7: Sindou Peaks & Return to Ouagadougou

Morning: visit the Pics de Sindou — dramatic sandstone peaks eroded into needles and towers, creating a natural fortress landscape. Return to Bobo-Dioulasso for flight or drive back to Ouagadougou. Farewell dinner at one of Ouaga’s best restaurants. Overnight in Ouagadougou.

Day 8: Depart Ouagadougou

Morning visit to the Artisanal Center of Ouagadougou for last purchases — bronze figurines, batik cloth, and leatherwork. Transfer to airport.
