Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Blantyre — Mulanje Base
Airport pickup and transfer to the base of Mount Mulanje, a massive granite massif rising from the plains. Meet your mountain guide and porters. Gear check and briefing. Overnight at Mulanje base lodge.
Day 2-4: Mount Mulanje — Sapitwa Summit (3,002m)
Three-day hut-to-hut trek on Mount Mulanje, one of Africa’s most dramatic mountain massifs. Day 1: hike through tea plantations into the montane forest, ascend to Chambe Hut at 2,100m. Day 2: the big day — climb to Sapitwa Peak (3,002m), Malawi’s highest point, with 360-degree views across Malawi to Mozambique and Lake Malawi glittering in the distance. Day 3: descend through cedar forests and waterfalls. The Mulanje Massif has more endemic plant species than any mountain of comparable size in Africa. Overnights at mountain huts.
Day 5: Tea Estate Recovery
Recovery day at the Satemwa Tea Estate. Soak tired muscles in the pool. Tour the tea factory, walk through the fragrant tea gardens, and taste single-origin teas and coffees. Afternoon massage (own expense). Overnight at tea estate.
Day 6-7: Lake Malawi — Cape Maclear
Drive to Cape Maclear on Lake Malawi. Two days of water activities: snorkeling with the lake’s famous cichlids (over 1,000 species), kayaking to uninhabited islands, stand-up paddleboarding, and freshwater sailing. Scuba diving available for certified divers (PADI courses available). Overnights at Cape Maclear.
Day 8: Domwe Island Adventure Camp
Boat to Domwe Island, the largest uninhabited island in Lake Malawi National Park. Set up camp. Hike the island’s trail to the summit for lake views. Snorkel the pristine rocks around the island. Paddle a dugout canoe. Sleep under the stars on an African island. Overnight camping on Domwe Island.
Day 9: Domwe to Senga Bay
Morning swim and snorkel. Boat back to the mainland. Drive to Senga Bay. Afternoon at leisure — beach, pool, or explore the local fish market. Farewell dinner on the beach. Overnight at Senga Bay.
Day 10: Return to Lilongwe — Depart
Drive to Lilongwe. Airport transfer. Tsalani bwino!
