Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Muscat — Collect Car
Arrival at Muscat International Airport. Pick up your 4×4 SUV (Toyota Land Cruiser or similar). Transfer to your hotel. Evening orientation and GPS route briefing. Overnight in Muscat.
Day 2: Muscat Discovery
Free day to explore Muscat at your own pace. Recommended: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (morning, dress code applies), Muttrah Souk, Royal Opera House tour, and sunset at the Al Alam Palace. Overnight in Muscat.
Day 3: Muscat to Sur via Wadi Shab
Hit the road! Drive south along the stunning coastal highway. Stop at the Bimmah Sinkhole for a swim. Hike into Wadi Shab (2 hours) to reach the emerald pools and hidden waterfall cave. Arrive in Sur, a charming coastal town. Overnight in Sur.
Day 4: Ras Al Jinz to Wahiba Sands
Morning at Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve. Continue west to the Wahiba Sands. Switch to 4×4 mode and drive into the dunes to your desert camp. Sunset sandboarding and camel ride. Stargazing. Overnight in the desert.
Day 5: Wahiba to Nizwa via Wadi Bani Khalid
Morning swim at Wadi Bani Khalid oasis. Drive through the dramatic Eastern Hajar Mountains to Nizwa. Explore Nizwa Fort and the silver souk at your leisure. Overnight in Nizwa.
Day 6: Jebel Akhdar — The Green Mountain
Ascend Jebel Akhdar (4×4 only — police checkpoint checks vehicles). Explore the mountain villages of Al Aqr and Al Ayn. Walk through ancient terraced rose gardens. Panoramic canyon viewpoints. Overnight at a mountain hotel.
Day 7: Jebel Shams — Oman’s Grand Canyon
Drive to Jebel Shams. Hike the famous Balcony Walk along the rim of Wadi Ghul (the Grand Canyon of Oman, 1,000m deep). One of the most spectacular day hikes in the Middle East. Overnight at Jebel Shams.
Day 8: Nakhal & Return to Muscat
Descend from the mountains. Visit Nakhal Fort and its palm oasis. Continue through date plantations to the coast. Afternoon return to Muscat. Return your 4×4. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Muscat.
Day 9: Depart Muscat
Airport transfer. Ma’a salama, Oman!
