Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Lilongwe

Welcome to Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa! Airport transfer to your hotel in Lilongwe. Afternoon city tour: visit the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, a sanctuary for rescued animals. Welcome dinner with nsima (maize porridge) and chambo (Lake Malawi fish). Overnight in Lilongwe.

Day 2: Lilongwe to Liwonde National Park

Drive south to Liwonde National Park, Malawi’s premier wildlife destination on the Shire River. Afternoon boat safari among hippos and crocodiles. Spot elephants drinking at the river’s edge, sable antelope, and waterbuck. Evening game drive searching for predators. Overnight at a riverside lodge.

Day 3: Liwonde Full Day Safari

Dawn game drive — Liwonde is famous for its elephant population and successful cheetah reintroduction. Visit the black rhino sanctuary to see these critically endangered animals. Afternoon walking safari with an armed ranger. Sunset boat cruise with sundowners on the Shire River. Overnight in Liwonde.

Day 4: Zomba Plateau

Journey to the Zomba Plateau, a forested mountain massif rising to 2,087m. Hike through pine forests to Queen’s View and Emperor’s View — stunning panoramas of southern Malawi. Visit the Mulunguzi Dam and trout farm. Cool mountain air after the valley heat. Overnight at Zomba.

Day 5-6: Lake Malawi — Cape Maclear

Drive to Lake Malawi, the world’s ninth-largest lake and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Two full days at Cape Maclear on the southern lakeshore. Snorkel among the famous Lake Malawi cichlids — over 1,000 species of colorful fish, more than any other lake on Earth. Kayak to nearby islands, hike to viewpoints, or simply relax on the golden sandy beaches. Boat trip to Thumbi Island for swimming and fish eagle feeding. Overnight at a lakeside lodge.

Day 7: Lake Malawi — Free Day

Full day at leisure on the lake. Optional activities: scuba diving among cichlids, sailing on a traditional dhow, village visit to meet local fishermen, or cycling through beachside villages. Farewell beach barbecue with fresh tilapia under the stars. Overnight at Lake Malawi.

Day 8: Depart Lilongwe

Scenic drive back to Lilongwe. Visit the craft market for Malawi’s famous wood carvings. Transfer to Kamuzu International Airport.
