Norway Fjord Trekking — Trolltunga & Folgefonna Glacier – 7 Days

Day 1: Arrive in Bergen

Welcome to Bergen, the colorful gateway to Norway’s fjords. Meet your CEO (Chief Experience Officer) and fellow travelers at the Heimen Hotel Bergen for an orientation session. Set out on a guided orientation walk through Bergen’s historic streets. Explore the UNESCO-listed Hanseatic Bryggen wharf with its iconic wooden buildings, the lively Fish Market, and the charming alleyways of the old town. In the evening, enjoy dinner at one of Bergen’s excellent seafood restaurants — the city is famous for its fresh cod, salmon, and shellfish.

Accommodation: Heimen Hotel Bergen (or similar)

Day 2: Bergen to Odda — Introduction Hike

After breakfast, depart Bergen and travel east along the stunning Hardangerfjord, the fourth-longest fjord in the world and known as the “Queen of the Fjords.” The drive offers spectacular views of orchards, waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks. Arrive in Odda, the adventure capital of Hardanger. Check into the Trolltunga Hotel, your base for the next five nights. In the afternoon, set out on an introductory hike through the surrounding area to warm up for the epic treks ahead. The trail winds through beautiful Norwegian forest and offers glimpses of the Folgefonna Glacier in the distance. Your guide will brief you on the upcoming hikes and equipment.

Accommodation: Trolltunga Hotel, Odda (Breakfast included)

Day 3: Buerdalen Valley Hike (10 km)

Today’s adventure takes you into the spectacular Buerdalen Valley, one of Norway’s most dramatic glacial valleys. The 10-kilometer hike follows the Buerelva River upstream through a landscape carved by ice and water. Towering cliffs rise on both sides as you navigate rocky terrain and cross mountain streams. Your guide will point out the unique flora and geology of this glaciated landscape. At the head of the valley, you’ll be rewarded with close-up views of the Buerbreen glacier, a dramatic arm of the massive Folgefonna ice cap. This hike serves as excellent preparation for the upcoming Trolltunga trek. The area is also known as Oddadalen — the Valley of the Waterfalls — with cascades tumbling from the heights all around you.

Accommodation: Trolltunga Hotel, Odda (Breakfast included)

Day 4: Folgefonna Glacier Hike

An unforgettable day on the ice. Travel to the base of Folgefonna Glacier, Norway’s third-largest glacier and a majestic ice plateau covering 207 square kilometers. After a safety briefing, strap on crampons and grab your ice axe for a guided glacier trek. Walk across the millennia-old blue ice, exploring crevasses, ice formations, and meltwater channels. The glacier surface reveals stunning shades of blue — from pale azure to deep cerulean — created by centuries of compression. Your experienced glacier guide will lead you safely across the ice while explaining the glacier’s formation, movement, and the impact of climate change. On a clear day, the views from the glacier extend across Hardangerfjord to the North Sea. A truly unique opportunity to walk on one of Europe’s great ice caps.

Accommodation: Trolltunga Hotel, Odda (Breakfast included)

Day 5: Free Day — Optional Kayaking, Biking, or RIB Boat

A well-deserved rest day or opportunity for additional adventures. Odda offers a wealth of optional activities to suit all interests and energy levels. Choose to go kayaking on the Hardangerfjord (550-1150 NOK), paddling past orchards and mountains reflected in the calm waters. Try a RIB boat fjord cruise (1050 NOK) for high-speed exploration of the coastline. Rent a bike (250-300 NOK) and cycle the scenic roads along the fjord. Kayak on Lake Sandvin (1045 NOK) surrounded by mountains. For the truly adventurous, there is an optional Trolltunga Via Ferrata Sunset/Sunrise Extension — a steel cable route allowing you to climb the sheer cliff face to Trolltunga for sunset, camp overnight, and watch sunrise from the iconic rock (subject to availability and weather). Alternatively, simply explore the quaint town of Odda, visit the Norwegian Museum of Hydropower and Industry, or relax by Lake Ringedalsvatnet.

Accommodation: Trolltunga Hotel, Odda (Breakfast included)

Day 6: Trolltunga Hike & Via Ferrata

The big day — Trolltunga (The Troll’s Tongue)! Rise early for the most iconic hike in Norway. The journey to Trolltunga is a challenging 20-28 kilometer round-trip trek through some of Norway’s most spectacular mountain terrain. Starting from Skjeggedal, you’ll ascend through dramatic landscapes above Ringedalsvatnet Lake. The trail passes mountain streams, snowfields, and panoramic viewpoints. After approximately 5-7 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the legendary Trolltunga rock formation — a thin sliver of rock jutting horizontally 700 meters above Lake Ringedalsvatnet. Standing on the Troll’s Tongue is an experience like no other, with the turquoise lake far below and mountains stretching to the horizon. Your guide will ensure safety during the photo session on the rock. For those choosing the Via Ferrata option, you’ll climb the cliff face using steel cables and iron rungs, adding an extra dimension of adventure to this already epic day. The return hike takes you back through the same stunning landscapes, arriving in the evening with an immense sense of achievement.

Note: This is a demanding full-day hike (10-12 hours). Very good physical condition required. The Trolltunga hiking season is typically June to September.

Accommodation: Trolltunga Hotel, Odda (Breakfast included)

Day 7: Odda to Bergen — Departure

After a final Norwegian breakfast and well-deserved rest, depart Odda for the return journey to Bergen. The drive back along Hardangerfjord gives you one last chance to absorb the magnificent scenery of western Norway — steep mountains, deep fjords, cascading waterfalls, and lush orchards. Arrive in Bergen for your departure. Your CEO can assist with onward travel arrangements. You’ll leave with memories of standing on Trolltunga, walking across the ancient Folgefonna Glacier, and experiencing Norway’s most dramatic landscapes up close.
