Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Malta
Welcome to Malta, the tiny archipelago with more history per square mile than anywhere else! Airport transfer to your hotel. Evening walk through Valletta, the fortress capital built by the Knights of St. John. Welcome dinner with traditional rabbit stew (stuffat tal-fenek) and Maltese wine. Overnight in Valletta.
Day 2: Valletta — UNESCO Capital
Full day in Valletta (UNESCO). Visit St. John’s Co-Cathedral — an unassuming exterior hiding one of Europe’s most ornate Baroque interiors, including Caravaggio’s masterpiece “The Beheading of St. John the Baptist.” Explore the Grand Master’s Palace, the Upper Barrakka Gardens with Grand Harbour views, and the Saluting Battery’s noon cannon. Afternoon at the Malta Experience audiovisual show and the National Museum of Archaeology. Overnight in Valletta.
Day 3: The Three Cities & Fort St. Angelo
Cross the Grand Harbour by traditional dghajsa water taxi to the Three Cities: Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. Walk Vittoriosa’s medieval streets and visit Fort St. Angelo, the castle-fortress that withstood the Great Siege of 1565. Explore the Inquisitor’s Palace. Afternoon visit to the Tarxien Temples (UNESCO), megalithic structures older than the Pyramids (3,600-2,500 BC). Overnight in Valletta.
Day 4: Mdina — The Silent City
Full day in Mdina, Malta’s ancient capital. Walk the silent, narrow streets of this medieval walled city where no cars are allowed. Visit St. Paul’s Cathedral and the catacombs. Afternoon at the nearby Dingli Cliffs, Malta’s highest point with dramatic 250m drops to the sea. Visit the prehistoric Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples (UNESCO) — standing stones older than Stonehenge positioned to mark the solstices. Overnight in Valletta.
Day 5: Gozo Island — Full Day Excursion
Ferry to Gozo, Malta’s greener sister island. Visit the Ggantija Temples (UNESCO), the world’s oldest free-standing structures (3,600+ BC) — older than the Egyptian pyramids. Explore the Citadel in Victoria (Rabat) with panoramic island views. Visit the stunning Azure Window site at Dwejra Bay (the Inland Sea) and the salt pans at Xwejni Bay. Swim at Ramla Bay, Gozo’s best sandy beach. Overnight in Gozo.
Day 6: Comino — The Blue Lagoon
Morning boat to Comino, the tiny island between Malta and Gozo. Spend the day at the legendary Blue Lagoon — impossibly turquoise waters over white sand, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Walk to St. Mary’s Tower, a 17th-century watchtower. Return to Malta. Overnight in Valletta.
Day 7: Marsaxlokk & Blue Grotto
Morning at the Marsaxlokk fishing village — see the colorful traditional luzzu boats with the Eye of Osiris painted on their bows. Sunday fish market (if timing allows). Afternoon boat trip to the Blue Grotto, a series of sea caves with spectacular blue light effects. Farewell dinner in a Valletta waterfront restaurant. Overnight in Valletta.
Day 8: Depart Malta
