Day 1: Arrive Freetown — Welcome to the Lion Mountain

Day 2: Freetown — History of Freedom
Full-day Freetown city tour. Visit the Railway Museum with its collection of colonial-era locomotives. Walk to the Cotton Tree (Freetown’s most famous landmark), St. George’s Cathedral, and the National Museum. Visit St. John’s Maroon Church, built by Jamaican Maroons who were among Freetown’s founders. Afternoon at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary — home to over 100 rescued chimpanzees in a beautiful forest reserve. Watch these intelligent primates and learn about the sanctuary’s conservation work. Overnight in Freetown.
Day 3: Bunce Island — The Slave Fortress
Morning speedboat to Bunce Island, West Africa’s largest British slave castle from the 18th century. This haunting site was the last African soil seen by thousands of enslaved people before the Middle Passage — many of whom ended up in South Carolina and Georgia. Walk through the ruins of the fort, the slave yards, and stand at the Door of No Return. Afternoon: the Peninsula beaches — Lakka, Hamilton, and River Number Two, some of West Africa’s finest. Overnight in Freetown.
Day 4: Banana Islands — Tropical Escape
Morning boat to the Banana Islands off the Freetown Peninsula. Snorkel in crystal-clear water, explore the island’s forest trails, visit the fishing village of Dublin, and learn about the islands’ history as a refuge for freed slaves. Fresh seafood lunch on the island — grilled lobster, snapper, and shrimp when available. Afternoon at leisure snorkeling, swimming, or relaxing. Overnight in Freetown.
Day 5: Freetown to Tiwai Island — Wildlife Sanctuary
Drive inland through Sierra Leone’s lush interior to Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary on the Moa River. This community-managed reserve is home to 11 primate species, 135 bird species, and the rare pygmy hippopotamus. Afternoon canoe safari on the Moa River — watch for monkeys, birds, and crocodiles along the banks. Overnight in a jungle camp on Tiwai Island.
Day 6: Liberia — Robertsport & Atlantic Coast
Cross the border into Liberia at Bo Waterside. Drive to Robertsport, a historic fishing village named after Liberia’s first president. This hidden gem has some of West Africa’s best surfing beaches. Explore the pristine coastline, meet local fishermen bringing in their catch, and enjoy the remote beauty of Liberia’s Atlantic shore. Overnight at Nana’s Lodge.
Day 7: Monrovia — Africa’s Oldest Republic
Drive to Monrovia, founded in 1822 and named after US President James Monroe. Full-day tour: Ducor Hill for panoramic views, Fort Norris (Liberia’s first lighthouse), the iconic Providence Baptist Church where Liberia’s Declaration of Independence was signed in 1847, the tomb of President William V.S. Tubman, and the Centennial Pavilion. Visit Providence Island, the original 1822 settlement site. Evening at the Waterside Market. Overnight in Monrovia.
Day 8: Firestone Plantation & Monkey Island
Morning at the Firestone Rubber Plantation — the world’s largest, operating since 1926. Watch the hypnotic process of rubber tapping. Afternoon: boat trip on the Farmington River to Monkey Island — six islands that are home to former laboratory chimpanzees now living in semi-freedom, cared for by the Humane Society International. Watch these remarkable animals from the boat. Evening at Libassa Ecolodge, a beautiful eco-resort between the ocean, forest, and a lagoon. Overnight at Libassa.
Day 9: Libassa Ecolodge — Beach & Forest
Full day of relaxation at Libassa. Swim in the natural lagoon, kayak through mangroves, walk the pristine beach, or birdwatch in the surrounding forest. Afternoon visit to the arts and crafts market for Liberian country cloth, carved masks, and jewelry. Farewell dinner featuring Liberian cuisine — palm butter, cassava leaf, jollof rice, and fresh Atlantic fish. Overnight at Libassa.
Day 10: Depart Liberia
Morning at leisure. Transfer to Roberts International Airport.
