Itinerary Highlights

Days 1-2: Antananarivo & Fly to Morondava

Arrive Tana. Visit the Rova and craft markets. Day 2: fly to Morondava on Madagascar’s west coast, gateway to the country’s most iconic landscapes. Overnight in Morondava.

Days 3-4: Kirindy Reserve — Madagascar’s Wild West

Full day at Kirindy Private Reserve, a dry deciduous forest that is one of Madagascar’s premier wildlife destinations. Kirindy is the best place to see the fossa — Madagascar’s largest carnivore, a cat-like, mongoose-related predator that is the lemurs’ primary natural enemy. Fossas are agile tree-climbers with semi-retractable claws and a tail as long as their body, capable of taking down lemurs several times their weight. Night walks in Kirindy reveal giant jumping rats (the size of rabbits, bouncing on hind legs like miniature kangaroos), narrow-striped mongooses, and at least 7 species of nocturnal lemur. The forest itself is magnificent — twisted, drought-adapted trees including three species of baobab, cathedral-like alleys of Alluaudia (octopus trees), and bizarre Didiereaceae — a family of spiny succulents found nowhere else on Earth. Overnights: Relais du Kirindy.

Days 5-7: Tsingy de Bemaraha — The Stone Forest

Full day transfer to Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park (UNESCO). The tsingy are razor-sharp limestone pinnacles — a forest of stone where erosion has carved limestone into needles, blades, and canyons up to 50 meters deep. “Tsingy” means “where one cannot walk barefoot” in Malagasy, and it’s an understatement — the formations are so sharp they can cut through climbing ropes. The park has developed a network of rope bridges, via ferrata cables, and suspension bridges traversing the pinnacle tops — one of the world’s most unique hiking experiences. Two full days exploring both Petit Tsingy and Grand Tsingy, plus canoeing on the Manambolo River through the tsingy gorges. Wildlife: Decken’s sifaka lemurs leap between razor-sharp pinnacles with inexplicable precision, never landing on the knives of stone. Overnights near Tsingy.

Days 8-9: Baobabs & Avenue of the Baobabs

Return to Morondava via the famous Avenue of the Baobabs. This 260-meter stretch of dirt road between Morondava and Belon’i Tsiribihina is one of Africa’s most photographed landscapes: 20-25 Grandidier’s baobabs (Adansonia grandidieri) lining the road like natural pillars, each 30 meters tall and up to 800 years old. The baobabs are remnants of a once-dense forest — the legendary “upside-down tree” whose massive trunk stores water (up to 120,000 liters). Sunset at the Avenue is the photographic holy grail — the baobabs silhouetted against a sky of fire, their branches like roots reaching for the heavens. Spend a full day and two sunsets here to capture the light. Overnights in Morondava.

Days 10-12: Belo sur Mer & Return

Excursion to Belo sur Mer, a traditional Vezo fishing village where dhows are built using techniques unchanged for a millennium. Return to Tana and departure.
