Itinerary
Day 1: Medan – Parapat – Samosir Island (D)
Arrive at Medan’s Kualanamu Airport and meet your guide. Begin the 5-hour scenic drive through the highlands of North Sumatra to Parapat, the gateway town on the shores of Lake Toba. En route, stop at the Sipiso-piso Waterfall, an impressive 120-meter cascade plunging into the northern end of Lake Toba, offering breathtaking panoramic views across the world’s largest volcanic lake. Continue to Parapat and board the ferry for the 45-minute crossing to Samosir Island. Check into your lakeside hotel in Tuk Tuk and enjoy a welcome dinner featuring fresh lake fish and Batak cuisine. Day 2: Samosir Island – Batak Cultural Discovery (B, L)
A full day exploring the cultural riches of Samosir Island. Continue to Ambarita Village to see the remarkable stone chairs and execution site where the Batak kings once held court and conducted rituals. Day 3: Lake Toba Exploration – Hot Springs & Viewpoints (B)
After breakfast, take a scenic drive around the northern shores of Samosir Island. Visit Pangururan, where natural hot springs bubble up along the lakeshore — the perfect spot for a therapeutic soak while gazing across the volcanic waters. Explore Tele, a viewpoint offering a spectacular panoramic view of Lake Toba from its highest vantage point. Continue to traditional Batak villages such as Lumban Suhi-suhi, known for its ulos weaving traditions. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and spend the afternoon exploring the pristine beaches and hidden coves of the island. Day 4: Tongging – Merek Hills – Berastagi (B, L)
Check out and take the morning ferry back to Parapat. Drive along the scenic northern rim of Lake Toba to Tongging Village and Merek Hills, offering the most photographed panoramic views of the entire caldera. Visit local fruit markets along the way where you can sample tropical fruits like mangosteen, rambutan, and durian (in season). Continue the ascent through pine forests and cool highland air to the charming mountain town of Berastagi, nestled at 1,300 meters between two active volcanoes. Visit the colorful Berastagi Fruit and Flower Market, famous for its marigolds, passion fruit, and locally grown produce. Check into your Berastagi hotel with views of Mount Sibayak.
Day 5: Berastagi – Medan Departure (B)
Optional early morning sunrise trek to Mount Sibayak (2,094m) for those seeking adventure — witness steam vents and sulfur fumaroles at the crater rim with a spectacular sunrise over the Karo highlands (additional cost, must be pre-booked). After breakfast, enjoy a panoramic drive to Gundaling Hill for final views of both Mount Sibayak and Mount Sinabung.
