Day 1: Medan – Bukit Lawang (D)

Arrival at Kualanamu International Airport in Medan. Meet your private driver and begin the scenic 4-hour journey through rubber and oil palm plantations to Bukit Lawang, the gateway to Gunung Leuser National Park. Check into your riverside guesthouse and enjoy a welcome dinner while the sounds of the Bohorok River and jungle set the mood for your adventure. Evening briefing with your certified local guide on tomorrow’s trek.

Day 2: Jungle Trek – Orangutan Encounters (B, L, D)

After breakfast, begin your full-day jungle trek into the heart of Gunung Leuser National Park. Your experienced local guide leads you through dense primary rainforest, home to the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan. With luck, you will observe these magnificent great apes in their natural habitat – swinging through the canopy, building nests, and feeding on wild fruits. The park is also home to Thomas leaf monkeys, white-handed gibbons, long-tailed macaques, and the elusive Sumatran peacock-pheasant. Stop for a jungle lunch by a pristine river. In the afternoon, arrive at your jungle camp near the river where your team sets up camp. Swim in the refreshing river, enjoy a campfire dinner, and fall asleep to the symphony of the rainforest.

Day 3: Deep Jungle Exploration (B, L, D)

Wake to the calls of gibbons echoing through the canopy. After a hearty camp breakfast, venture deeper into the forest where fewer tourists venture. Today offers the best chance to encounter the dominant male orangutans and observe their fascinating nest-building behavior. Your guide shares knowledge about medicinal plants, jungle survival techniques, and the conservation efforts protecting this UNESCO World Heritage site. After a full day of trekking, arrive at your second jungle camp, deeper and more remote. Another evening of campfire stories and stargazing through the canopy gaps.

Day 4: River Rafting – Return (B, L)

The final morning brings an exciting highlight: traditional tube rafting down the Bohorok River. Board your inflatable tubes and float back toward Bukit Lawang, passing through gentle rapids and stunning jungle scenery – a refreshing and fun way to exit the national park. Arrive back at the guesthouse for a final lunch and shower. Afternoon transfer back to Medan or the airport for your onward journey, carrying unforgettable memories of your orangutan encounter.
