Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Irkutsk — The Paris of Siberia
Arrive in Irkutsk, the historic Siberian capital. Afternoon walking tour of the 130 Kvartal and main boulevards. Welcome dinner: Siberian pelmeni, omul, and cedar nut liqueur. Overnight in Irkutsk.
Day 2: Irkutsk & Trans-Siberian Railway to Port Baikal
Explore Irkutsk’s ornate wooden houses, Epiphany Cathedral, and Znamensky Monastery. Afternoon: board the Circum-Baikal Railway, the Golden Buckle of the Trans-Siberian — 4 hours of tunnels, bridges, and cliff-edge tracks with Baikal’s turquoise water and snow-capped peaks as backdrop. Disembark at Port Baikal, then ferry 1 hour across the Angara River source to Listvyanka. Overnight in Listvyanka.
Day 3: Great Baikal Trail — Listvyanka to Bolshie Koty
One of the world’s most beautiful day hikes: 22km along the Great Baikal Trail from Listvyanka to Bolshie Koty. The trail hugs the shoreline, climbing through taiga forests of Siberian pine and larch, with constant views of the impossibly blue water below. Baikal’s water is so clear (visibility up to 40m) that the lake floor is visible far from shore. Wildflowers carpet the forest floor in summer — Siberian lilies, lady’s slipper orchids, and the endemic Baikal skullcap. Arrive at Bolshie Koty, a village of 100 people accessible only by boat or foot. Swim in Baikal — the water temperature reaches 14-18°C in August, bracingly cold but addictive. Overnight in Bolshie Koty guesthouse.
Day 4: Kayaking Baikal’s Turquoise Waters
Full day of sea kayaking on Lake Baikal. The lake is so large (636km long, 79km wide at its widest) that it generates its own weather and waves — it’s essentially a freshwater sea with 27 islands. Paddle along the Primorsky Ridge, where mountains plunge directly into water so clear you can count stones on the bottom 20m down. Explore sea caves and grottos carved by wave action into the marble cliffs. Stop at isolated beaches for lunch and swimming. The scale of Baikal from water level — the opposite shore invisible over the horizon — gives you a true sense of this body of water’s immensity. 15-20km of paddling with full instruction provided. Overnight in Bolshie Koty.
Day 5: Ferry to Olkhon Island — Shaman’s Heartland
Boat back to Listvyanka, then drive 4 hours through the Tazheran Steppe — a landscape of Buryat sacred sites marked by colorful prayer flags and stone cairns — to the ferry crossing to Olkhon Island. Cross the Olkhon Gates strait (ferry, 20 minutes) to the island. Olkhon is Baikal’s largest island (730 km²) and the geographic, historic, and sacred center of the lake. Evening at Saraysky Beach, a 3km stretch of sand on Baikal’s shore where you can swim (the shallow bay warms to 20°C in summer). Overnight in Khuzhir.
Day 6: Cape Burkhan & Khoboy — Olkhon’s Sacred Sites
Morning at Cape Burkhan (Shamanka Rock), walking the beach where Buryat shamans have conducted ceremonies for millennia. Drive north along Olkhon’s dirt tracks through pine forests and steppe to Khoboy Cape, the island’s northern point — a dramatic cliff dropping vertically into deep blue water. The view from Khoboy encompasses the Maloe More (Small Sea) on one side and the open Baikal on the other. The cape is considered one of the most powerful energy centers in shamanic tradition. Afternoon: swim at one of Baikal’s sandy coves. Overnight in Khuzhir.
Day 7: Buryat Culture & Tazheran Steppe
Ferry back to the mainland. Visit a Buryat yurt settlement for lunch: buuzy, shulen, and tarasun. Experience throat singing (khöömei) — the deep overtone chanting that produces two notes simultaneously. Afternoon: hike in the Tazheran Steppe to the Cave of Dreams, a natural grotto, and the Buddhist stupa overlooking the steppe. Overnight in Irkutsk.
Day 8: Taltsy Museum & Farewell
Morning at the Taltsy Museum of Wooden Architecture — 40+ historic buildings from across Siberia. Afternoon free in Irkutsk for last exploration and souvenir shopping (Siberian pine nut products, Baikal jewelry, Russian nesting dolls). Evening farewell dinner. Overnight in Irkutsk.
Day 9: Depart Irkutsk
Transfer to Irkutsk airport.
