Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive San Jose

Land at Juan Santamaria International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in San Jose. Evening: brief orientation of the capital. Welcome dinner at a traditional Costa Rican restaurant — try casado (the national dish: rice, beans, plantains, salad, and choice of meat) and fresh fruit juice. Overnight in San Jose.

Day 2: La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano

Drive to La Fortuna (3 hours), the town at the foot of Arenal Volcano (1,670m). Arenal was Costa Rica’s most active volcano until 2010 — it erupted continuously from 1968 to 2010, making it one of the world’s most consistently active volcanoes. Today it’s dormant but still magnificent, a near-perfect cone towering above the rainforest. Afternoon: visit the Arenal Hanging Bridges — a 3km trail of 15 bridges (6 hanging) through the rainforest canopy. Walking at treetop level through the cloud forest, with views of the volcano, is a quintessential Costa Rica experience. The bridges are engineering marvels — the longest spans 100m and the highest is 60m above the forest floor. Look for howler monkeys, toucans, and the elusive resplendent quetzal. Evening: soak in the natural hot springs heated by the volcano — Tabacon or Baldi, with pools of varying temperatures cascading through tropical gardens. Overnight in La Fortuna.

Day 3: Arenal — Adventure & Nature

Full day of Costa Rican adventure. Choose from: zip-lining through the cloud forest canopy (one of the longest zip-line courses in Central America), white-water rafting on the Pacuare or Sarapiqui rivers (Class III-IV rapids through jungle gorges), canyoneering (rappelling down waterfalls), or a more relaxed option — a guided nature walk at the Arenal Observatory Lodge (the closest observation point to the volcano, with trails through primary rainforest). Afternoon: visit a working coffee and chocolate plantation — Costa Rica is famous for its high-altitude arabica coffee, and you’ll learn the entire process from bean to cup, followed by chocolate tasting made from locally grown cacao. Overnight in La Fortuna.

Day 4: Rio Celeste — The Blue River

Full day excursion to Tenorio Volcano National Park, home to Rio Celeste — one of the most beautiful rivers in the world. The water is an intense, unearthly turquoise blue caused by a chemical reaction where two clear streams (the Buena Vista and the Roble) converge. The minerals (aluminum silicates) suspended in the water scatter sunlight to create the blue color — a natural phenomenon that must be seen to be believed. Hike through the rainforest to the Los Tenideros (the convergence point where the blue appears), the waterfall (a 30m cascade of turquoise water), and the hot springs. The hike is moderate (3-4 hours round trip), and the reward is swimming in the blue river at the end. Return to La Fortuna. Overnight in La Fortuna.

Day 5: Manuel Antonio — Pacific Paradise

Drive to Manuel Antonio on the Pacific coast (4 hours). This is Costa Rica’s most famous national park, and for good reason: it combines pristine rainforest with stunning white-sand beaches, all in a compact area (683 hectares on land + 55,000 hectares of marine reserve). Afternoon: explore the park’s trails. The wildlife density here is extraordinary — white-faced capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, two-toed and three-toed sloths, iguanas, agoutis, and over 350 bird species including toucans and scarlet macaws. The park’s main trail (Punta Cathedral) leads to a viewpoint where the rainforest meets the sea — a tombolo (sandbar) connects the mainland to Cathedral Point. Swim at Espadilla Sur beach, consistently rated among the world’s best. Overnight in Manuel Antonio.

Day 6: Manuel Antonio — Beach & Wildlife

Morning: guided nature walk in Manuel Antonio National Park with a professional naturalist guide. The guide’s spotting scope is essential — without it, you’ll miss the sloths (they look like termite nests to the untrained eye), the tiny poison dart frogs (bright red with blue legs, the “blue jeans frog”), and the well-camouflaged Jesus Christ lizards (they can run across water). The guides know where specific animals sleep and can show you things you’d never find alone.
Afternoon: free time to enjoy the beaches, take a catamaran cruise along the coast (spotting dolphins and sea turtles), or go sea kayaking around the dramatic rock formations. Sunset at the park entrance — it’s common to see troops of monkeys crossing the road as they settle in for the night. Farewell dinner at a restaurant in the hilltop town with views over the Pacific. Overnight in Manuel Antonio.

Day 7: Departure

Morning at leisure for a final swim or nature walk. Drive back to San Jose (3 hours) with a stop at the Tarcoles River bridge to see the crocodiles basking below (one of the largest wild crocodile populations in Central America — sometimes 20-30 crocodiles visible at once). Transfer to the airport for departure.
