Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Caracas — Gateway to Venezuela

Arrive Simón Bolívar International Airport. Evening briefing about the Angel Falls expedition. Overnight in Caracas.

Day 2: Caracas to Canaima — Into the Lost World

Morning flight to Canaima village, gateway to Canaima National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage site of 30,000 sq km of tepuis (tabletop mountains), the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World.” These ancient sandstone plateaus, some 2 billion years old, rise vertically from the jungle like islands in a green sea. Afternoon: boat excursion to the Canaima Lagoon with its seven waterfalls — Hacha, Wadaima, Golondrina, and Ucaima — cascading from the top of the plateau. Walk behind Sapo Falls (Salto El Sapo), feeling the full force of water thundering inches from your path. Overnight in Canaima camp.

Day 3: River Journey to Angel Falls — Salto Ángel

Dawn departure: motorized curiara (indigenous canoe) up the Carrao and Churún rivers. The 4-5 hour journey upriver is an adventure in itself — navigating rapids, passing through narrow canyons, surrounded by the sheer walls of tepuis rising from the jungle. The vegetation grows denser and more primeval as you travel deeper into the park. Arrive at Isla Ratón camp, the base for Angel Falls. Afternoon: hike through the jungle to the Mirador Laime viewpoint — and there it is. Salto Ángel (Angel Falls), at 979m the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall. Water plunges from the top of Auyán-tepui, falling so far that much of it turns to mist before reaching the bottom. The scale is incomprehensible — 19 times taller than Niagara Falls — and even at a distance, the roar fills the air. The waterfall was named for American aviator Jimmy Angel, who crash-landed on top of Auyán-tepui in 1937 while searching for gold (he found none, but gave his name to one of the world’s natural wonders). Overnight in hammocks at the riverside camp.

Day 4: Angel Falls Base & Swimming

Morning hike to the base of Angel Falls (1.5 hours). The trail is muddy, rocky, and utterly worth it. At the base, you’re in the spray zone — water mist drenches everything, rainbows form and dissolve continuously, and the sound is a constant, deep thunder. The pool at the base is swimmable, and the water is ice-cold and utterly refreshing. This is one of the world’s most remote and spectacular places — fewer than 10,000 people make it here each year. Afternoon: return by curiara downriver to Canaima. The journey back downstream is faster and no less beautiful. Evening: celebration dinner at the camp. Overnight in Canaima.

Day 5: Canaima to Gran Sabana — Tepui Landscapes

Morning flight/vehicle to the Gran Sabana region. The Gran Sabana is a vast savanna dotted with tepuis — flat-topped mountains rising abruptly from the grassland, with waterfalls streaming from their cliffs. Visit Kavanayen, a remote indigenous village, and the Quebrada de Jaspe (Jasper Creek), where the riverbed is a solid sheet of red jasper — a semi-precious stone — creating one of the most unusual rivers on Earth. The Pemon indigenous people have lived in these lands for thousands of years, and their connection to the tepuis runs deep — each mountain has a spirit, a story, a name. Overnight in a Gran Sabana eco-lodge.

Day 6: Gran Sabana to Caracas — Departure

Morning visit to the viewpoint of Mount Roraima, the most famous tepui (the inspiration for Pixar’s “Up”). On clear days, the 400m sheer cliffs of the triple-border mountain (Venezuela, Brazil, Guyana) are visible. Transfer back to Canaima, flight to Caracas, and international departure.
