Day 1: Arrival in Niamey & Flight to Agadez — Desert Gateway

Arrive at Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey and connect to the domestic flight to Agadez, the historic gateway to the Sahara. During the 1.5-hour flight north, watch the landscape transform from Sahelian scrubland to the vast desert, with the dark silhouette of the Air Mountains appearing on the northern horizon. Upon arrival, transfer to your traditional auberge guesthouse. The afternoon is spent in Agadez’s UNESCO-listed old town — visit the Grand Mosque with its towering 27-meter mud-brick minaret, the Sultan’s Palace, and the artisan quarters where Tuareg silversmiths and leatherworkers practice their crafts. Your trekking guide will conduct a full briefing covering the route, terrain, weather conditions, and what to expect during six days of high-desert trekking. Welcome dinner at a local restaurant with Tuareg specialties. Overnight at Auberge d’Agadez.

Day 2: Agadez to Timia Oasis — Gardens in the Desert

After an early breakfast, board 4×4 vehicles for the spectacular 4-5 hour drive into the Air Mountains. The route follows the Telwa Wadi (dry riverbed), passing through Azel, a charming village of settled Tuareg farmers and herders. As you climb into the mountains, the terrain transforms dramatically — from flat desert to rugged volcanic peaks, deep gorges, and unexpected pockets of green. Arrive at Timia, one of the Air Mountains’ most beautiful oasis villages, famous for its lush gardens of oranges, lemons, dates, pomegranates, and guavas — a miracle of traditional irrigation in the heart of the Sahara. Timia’s guelta (natural waterhole) in a nearby canyon is a year-round water source that sustains the gardens and attracts wildlife including camels, birds, and occasionally desert gazelles. In the afternoon, take an acclimatization hike around Timia, visiting the gardens and meeting local farmers. The contrast between the black volcanic rock, the brilliant green of the gardens, and the deep blue desert sky is unforgettable. Camp overnight near Timia, with dinner prepared by your Tuareg team.

Day 3: Trekking to Mount Tamgak — The Roof of the Air

Today marks the beginning of serious trekking. After breakfast, begin the hike toward Mount Tamgak, the most striking peak in the Air Mountains at approximately 1,800 meters. The trail follows ancient Tuareg herding paths through a landscape of black basalt formations, eroded volcanic plugs, and seasonal watercourses lined with acacia trees. The trek covers 12-15 kilometers with an elevation gain of approximately 600 meters. Pack camels accompany the group, carrying camping equipment and supplies — a traditional arrangement that has been used for centuries in these mountains. Your Tuareg guide will point out wildlife tracks, medicinal plants, and geological features along the route. Stop for a picnic lunch at a shaded spot with views over a vast volcanic landscape. Reach the Tamgak base camp by late afternoon, set at approximately 1,500 meters with magnificent views of the surrounding peaks. As the sun sets, watch the play of light and shadow across the volcanic massif — the colors shift from black to purple to deep red. Camp overnight with dinner around the fire.

Day 4: Tamgak Summit & Prehistoric Rock Art

An early start for the summit push to the top of Mount Tamgak (approximately 2 hours of steep hiking from base camp). The trail is challenging but non-technical, winding through basalt boulder fields and across rocky ridgelines. From the summit, the reward is one of Africa’s most extraordinary panoramas — 360-degree views of the Air Mountains’ volcanic peaks stretching to the horizon, with the vast Ténéré Desert shimmering beyond. On clear days, visibility extends over 100 kilometers. After time at the summit for photographs and rest, descend to camp for a late breakfast. In the afternoon, hike to nearby prehistoric rock art sites. The Air Mountains contain some of the Sahara’s most significant concentrations of ancient rock engravings, dating back to the Neolithic Subpluvial period (6,000-8,000 years ago) when the Sahara was a green savannah. You’ll see remarkably detailed depictions of giraffes, elephants, ostriches, antelope, and cattle — animals that have not lived in this region for thousands of years. These engravings offer a powerful connection to the deep human history of the Sahara. Return to camp for dinner. Second night at Tamgak camp.

Day 5: Iférouane Village — Tuareg Craftsmanship & Culture

Break camp and begin the trek toward Iférouane, one of the Air Mountains’ most significant Tuareg settlements, located at the foot of Mount Tamgak. The trail descends through stunning green gardens surrounding the village’s traditional banco (mud-brick) huts — an oasis of cultivation in the arid mountains. Iférouane is renowned throughout Niger for its metalsmiths and craftsmen, and a visit to the village’s artisan quarter is a highlight. Watch silversmiths create intricate Tuareg jewelry using traditional lost-wax casting techniques — the famous Cross of Agadez, elaborate earrings, and decorative items. Visit the blacksmiths who forge tools and the leatherworkers producing traditional camel saddles and water skins. Meet village elders who will share stories of Tuareg history, folklore, and the challenges of maintaining traditional lifeways in the 21st century. In the afternoon, the 4×4 vehicles meet the group for the drive back toward Agadez, stopping en route at additional viewpoints and geological sites. Arrive in Agadez by early evening. Check into your auberge for a well-deserved hot shower — your first in four days. Celebratory dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at Auberge d’Agadez.

Day 6: Agadez Morning & Return to Niamey

Enjoy a relaxed morning in Agadez — your legs may appreciate the rest after three days of mountain trekking. Browse the Agadez market for souvenirs including Tuareg silver jewelry, hand-tooled leather goods, tagelmusts (traditional indigo turbans), and locally produced dates from the Air Mountains oases. Visit any sites missed on Day 1, such as the Musée d’Agadez with its fascinating exhibits on Tuareg culture, prehistoric rock art casts, and meteorites from the Ténéré. Midday transfer to Agadez airport for the return flight to Niamey. As you fly south, watch the Air Mountains recede into the distance — the volcanic peaks gradually shrinking until they disappear into the desert haze. Arrive in Niamey by late afternoon.
