Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Datong
Welcome to Datong, the former Northern Wei Dynasty capital. Visit the Huayan Temple (Liao Dynasty), the only surviving Liao-era temple complex in China with original 9th-century Buddhist statuary. Walk along the rebuilt ancient city wall for a panoramic sunset over the new Datong. Evening try Shanxi’s signature “dao xiao mian” (knife-cut noodles) — noodles shaved by a chef wielding a knife in one hand and a dough cube in the other, producing 200 noodles per minute. Overnight in Datong.
Day 2: Yungang Grottoes & Hanging Temple
Morning at Yungang Grottoes — UNESCO World Heritage cave network with 51,000+ Buddha statues carved into the sandstone cliff over 100+ years. The statues blend Indian Gandharan, Byzantine, and Chinese styles. Visit Cave 5 (Yuan Dynasty era cave) and Cave 6 (Tang Dynasty masterpiece). Drive to the Hanging Temple (悬空寺, 491 AD) — a 1500-year-old temple on sheer cliffs of Mount Heng, constructed using horizontal wooden beams inserted into holes cut into the rock. Walk the narrow wooden planks through the cliff halls, viewing Taoist, Buddhist, and Confucian statues in one small cliff. Overnight in Datong.
Day 3: Drive to Mount Wutai
Drive 250km through the Shanxi countryside to Mount Wutai. Visit Tayuan Temple — the famous “White Pagoda” (Tang Dynasty 854 AD, 75m tall), the tallest surviving wooden tower in China. Walk through Dailuo Ding, a 13-story pagoda. Visit Xiantong Temple — the largest temple complex in China with 108 halls, once home to 1,000 monks. See the bronze Sutra Hall (the only bronze building still in use). Overnight at Wutaishan.
Day 4: Mount Wutai Pilgrimage
Morning hike from Huayan Temple (Song Dynasty 1068 AD) to Bodhisattva Summit (1,884m). Visit the 5 surviving temples along the way. The temple complex dates to the founding of Buddhism in China (138 AD — among the earliest anywhere). The mountain is the “Pure Land of Manjushri,” one of the four great bodhisattvas. Evening meditation class in the mountain temple. Overnight at Wutaishan.
Day 5: Wutaishan → Pingyao
Drive 240km to Pingyao. Arrive at the ancient walled city (UNESCO) and walk the Ming Dynasty city wall (1370 AD) with panoramic views. Visit the Qingxiang Jiuda Wanping (Council Hall) where 19th-century Shanxi merchants met. Continue to the Ri Shengchang Livery Store (1823), China’s first bank — with vault rooms and accounting systems years ahead of their time. Overnight in Pingyao.
Day 6: Pingyao & Depart
Morning visit to the Wang’s Family Compound — the largest family mansion in China with 1,318 rooms, the height of Shanxi merchant architecture. Visit the Zhangbi Ancient Castle (Tier 1, dragon-and-tiger hilltop fortress), used as a vault for Shanxi merchant silver. Afternoon drive to Taiyuan Wusu Airport for departure.
