Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Qingdao — Old Town Discovery

Welcome to Qingdao. Driver will pick you up at Jiaodong Airport and transfer to your 4-star hotel. Afternoon: walk the famous Badaguan area, where 10 streets are named after the 8 famous Chinese passes of the Great Wall (as a creative geography lesson), featuring 200+ preserved 1930s European-style villas. Continue to Tsingtao Beer Museum in the original 1903 German-built brewery — sample the unpasteurized raw “fresh Tsingtao.” Evening walk Zhongshan Road to admire the German colonial architectural style and shop the famous pier food market. Overnight in Qingdao.

Day 2: Qingdao — Laoshan & Coastal Splendor

Drive 40km east to Laoshan Mountain — “the Mountain of the Immortals,” with breathtaking views of the Yellow Sea cliffs. Take the cable car to the upper terraces, visiting the colossal 36m Laojun statue (a Taoist deity overseeing the world). Walk along the cliff pathways with sea breezes. Afternoon: return to Qingdao for a walk along May 4th Square, the 1919 student movement memorial. Visit the Olympic Sailing Center — built for the 2008 Olympic regatta. Evening seafood dinner at the pier. Overnight in Qingdao.

Day 3: Train to Weihai — Liugong Island

Morning bullet train (1 hour) to Weihai. After lunch, take the ferry to Liugong Island, the site where China’s first modern naval base stood (1887). Visit the Sino-Japanese War Museum, where the 1895 Battle of Yalu River is commemorated — including the tragic explosion of the Dingyuan warship that took Admiral Ding Ruchang down with the flag. Walk the 50-ton Iron Turtle Cannon of the Qing Dynasty. Continue to the Jiawu Sino-Japanese War Memorial Hall with its pensive atmosphere. Return ferry. Overnight in Weihai.

Day 4: Chengshantou — Yellow Sea Sunrise Point

Morning drive to Chengshantou Scenic Area — the easternmost point of the Chinese mainland in Shandong Province. See the “Boulder Park” where wave-eroded stones form natural sculptures. Visit the 750-meter coastal boardwalk with views of the Bohai-Yellow Sea confluence. Drive back through Yantai for lunch. Afternoon visit Yantai Hill Park, where the 1862 Qing-era Minghanhai Battle Monument stands. Visit the Zhangyu Wine Culture Museum, the oldest winery in China (founded 1892 by the Zhang Bishi brothers from Indonesia). Evening at Yantai’s famous Bohai Hotel district. Overnight in Yantai.

Day 5: Penglai Pavilion — Mythical Sea & Depart

Drive to Penglai Pavilion, one of China’s four great ancient architectural complexes (1,061 AD). The pavilion is famous as the legendary destination of Qin Shi Huang’s quest for immortality elixir — and one of China’s most beautiful seafront Taoist temples. Walk the 100-meter sea cliffs to the pavilion looking out at 8,000+ islands of the Bohai Sea, where mirages (the “Penglai mirages”) frequently appear. Visit the lighthouse and the Three Immortals Temple. Drive to Yantai Airport for departure.
