Day 1: Arrival in Niamey — Capital Orientation & Niger River Sunset

Arrive at Diori Hamani International Airport, named after Niger’s first president. After immigration formalities, transfer to Bravia Hotel Niamey, a comfortable 4-star hotel in the city center. After settling in, begin your orientation tour of Niger’s capital. Start at the National Museum of Niger, one of West Africa’s best museums, with exhibits spanning traditional architecture (full-scale reconstructions of Hausa, Zarma, and Tuareg dwellings), prehistoric artifacts from the Ténéré Desert, Tuareg silver jewelry and leather work, and a small zoo featuring local wildlife including warthogs, crocodiles, and various bird species. Next, visit the Grande Mosquée de Niamey, the city’s largest mosque with a striking green dome and towering minaret visible across the city. In the late afternoon, head to the Niamey hippo viewing point along the Niger River — remarkably, pods of hippos live within the city limits and can be seen surfacing and swimming just offshore, an extraordinary urban wildlife experience. Watch the sun set over the Niger River from a riverside café, where fishermen in pirogues (traditional wooden canoes) cast their nets as the sky turns gold and pink. Day 2: Kouré Giraffe Reserve & Niger River Pirogue Cruise

After breakfast, depart for Kouré Giraffe Reserve, approximately one hour southeast of Niamey. This community-managed reserve is home to one of Africa’s most remarkable conservation success stories — the West African giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis peralta), a distinct subspecies found nowhere else on Earth. In 1996, only 48 individuals remained, teetering on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss and hunting. Today, through a pioneering community conservation program, over 600 giraffes roam freely across the reserve’s acacia woodlands and farmlands. Meet your local community guide and set out on foot to track the giraffes. Unlike many African safari experiences where animals are viewed from vehicles, here you can approach on foot to within 5 meters — the giraffes are habituated to human presence and continue grazing peacefully. This close encounter with Earth’s tallest land animal is genuinely moving. After the tracking experience, enjoy a picnic lunch under a shade tree. Return to Niamey by early afternoon.

In the late afternoon, board a traditional pirogue (wooden canoe) for a cruise on the Niger River. The pirogue glides past fishermen casting their nets, women washing clothes along the banks, and children waving from riverside villages. Cross to the opposite bank where distinctive hay-colored sand dunes rise from the river — an unexpected Saharan landscape. If water levels permit, stop at a sandbank island for a short walk and photographs. Watch for river wildlife including hippos, Nile monitor lizards, and a variety of water birds including herons, egrets, and the prehistoric-looking hamerkop. Day 3: Grand Marché, Artisan Village & Contemporary Niamey

Begin the day at Niamey’s Grand Marché — the commercial heart of Niger’s capital. This sprawling market is a sensory explosion: stalls piled high with colorful wax-print fabrics, sacks of aromatic spices (cumin, ginger, cloves, dried hibiscus flowers), Tuareg silver jewelry displayed on black velvet, hand-tooled leather bags and sandals, traditional medicines and herbs, and everyday household goods. Your guide will help navigate the market’s sections and explain the origins and uses of various goods. This is an excellent opportunity for souvenir shopping at fair prices, with bargaining being part of the cultural experience. Next, visit the Centre de Formation et de Promotion des Artisans (CFPA), the artisan training center and cooperative where you can watch craftspeople at work — silversmiths, weavers, potters, and leather workers — and purchase directly from the makers at fixed fair prices.

After lunch at a restaurant in the Plateau district, visit Niamey’s emerging contemporary cultural scene. Stop at the Centre Culturel Franco-Nigérien (CCFN) which regularly hosts art exhibitions, film screenings, and performances. Visit the Musée National’s gallery for rotating exhibitions of modern Nigerien artists. If available, visit a local artist’s studio for a glimpse of Niger’s contemporary art world, where traditional motifs meet modern expression. In the late afternoon, drive to the Plateau district’s administrative quarter to see the Presidential Palace and National Assembly from outside, then enjoy a coffee or fresh juice at a café popular with Niamey’s young professionals. Day 4: Niamey Cathedral, Final Explorations & Departure

After breakfast, visit Niamey Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Perpétuel Secours), a modest but significant landmark reflecting Niger’s religious diversity in a predominantly Muslim country. Located near the National Museum, the cathedral’s simple architecture and peaceful gardens offer a moment of quiet reflection. Depending on flight time, additional optional activities include: a visit to the Université Abdou Moumouni campus for a glimpse of Nigerien student life; a walk through the Saga residential neighborhood with its mix of traditional banco houses and modern villas; or a return to the artisan center for last-minute purchases. Transfer to Diori Hamani International Airport for your departure flight.
