Day 1: Arrival in Niamey & Overland Journey to Zinder

Arrive at Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey early morning. After meeting your guide, begin the overland journey east toward Zinder, approximately an 8-hour drive through the Nigerien Sahel. While long, the drive itself is a rich cultural experience — the road passes through traditional villages, millet fields, and market towns that reveal the rhythms of rural life in West Africa. Stop for lunch in Maradi, Niger’s third-largest city and commercial hub, known for its vibrant markets and Hausa architecture. Arrive in Zinder by late afternoon. Zinder served as the capital of Niger during the colonial period (1922-1926) but its history stretches back centuries further as the seat of the Damagaram Sultanate, a powerful Hausa state that dominated the region. Check into your traditional guesthouse, often a restored Hausa merchant’s house with central courtyard, intricate wall decorations, and cool shaded rooms. The finished leather becomes bags, sandals, saddles, and cushions sold throughout West Africa. Day 4: Maradi Morning & Return to Niamey

After breakfast, explore Maradi’s famous morning market — Niger’s commercial capital is known for its entrepreneurial spirit and the market offers excellent opportunities for last-minute souvenir shopping including hand-dyed indigo fabrics, leather goods, and regional spices. Visit the Maradi Artisan Center to see more examples of Hausa craftsmanship. Mid-morning, continue the drive westward to Niamey (approximately 5 hours), with a stop for lunch en route. Arrive in Niamey by late afternoon. Depending on your flight time, there may be an opportunity for a brief visit to the National Museum or a stroll along the Niger River. Transfer to Diori Hamani International Airport for your departure flight.
