Day 1: Hanoi – Cao Bang via Ma Phuc Pass (330 km)
Depart Hanoi early morning, heading northeast through the Red River Delta and into the mountainous provinces. The journey follows National Highway 3, passing through Thai Nguyen’s tea plantations before climbing into Cao Bang province. Cross the scenic Ma Phuc Pass, known for its seven sweeping bends and panoramic valley views. Stop at Dong Khe, the historic battlefield site from the First Indochina War in 1950. Arrive in Cao Bang city by late afternoon and check into your hotel. Enjoy an evening walk along the Bang Giang River before dinner featuring local specialties like roasted duck and sour pho.
Day 2: Cao Bang – Ban Gioc Waterfall – Nguom Ngao Cave (85 km each way)
After an early breakfast, drive northeast toward the Chinese border through spectacular karst mountain scenery. Your first stop is the massive Nguom Ngao Cave (Tiger Cave), stretching 2,144 meters through an ancient limestone mountain. Marvel at the towering stalactites, underground chambers, and crystalline formations shaped over millions of years. Continue to Ban Gioc Waterfall, the crown jewel of Cao Bang — a thunderous 30-meter-high cascade spanning 300 meters across the Quay Son River, marking the natural border between Vietnam and China. Take a bamboo raft ride right up to the mist of the falls, and climb to the viewing pagoda for breathtaking panoramic perspectives. On the return journey, visit Phuoc Sen village, famous for its centuries-old blacksmith tradition crafting agricultural tools. Overnight in a Nung ethnic homestay near the waterfall area.
Day 3: Ban Gioc – Pac Bo Cave – Ba Be National Park (180 km)
Wake to the sound of the distant waterfall and enjoy breakfast with your Nung host family. Bid farewell to Ban Gioc and drive west toward Pac Bo Cave in Ha Quang district. This historic site marks where Ho Chi Minh returned to Vietnam in 1941 after 30 years abroad, living in the cave and translating Communist texts by the clear Lenin Stream. Walk the same paths as Uncle Ho through lush jungle and limestone boulders. After lunch, continue your journey south toward Ba Be National Park, crossing dramatic mountain passes and remote valleys. Arrive at Pac Ngoi village, a traditional Tay stilt-house settlement on the shores of Ba Be Lake, where you will spend the night in a lakeside homestay. Enjoy a traditional Tay dinner and perhaps a rice wine toast with your hosts.
Day 4: Ba Be Lake Cruise – Hanoi (230 km)
Rise early for the serene beauty of Ba Be Lake at dawn — mist rising from the emerald waters, fishermen in dugout canoes, and limestone peaks reflected in the still surface. Board a traditional long-tail boat for a cruise across Vietnam’s largest natural freshwater lake, passing through Puong Cave — a 300-meter tunnel carved by the Nang River. Visit Dau Dang Waterfall and An Ma Temple on a lake island. After the cruise, enjoy a final local lunch before beginning the drive back to Hanoi. Stop at small villages and viewpoints along the way. Arrive in Hanoi by early evening, where your Cao Bang adventure concludes.
