Day 1: Dong Hoi – Phong Nha-Ke Bang – Botanical Garden Trek (45 km)
Arrive at Dong Hoi Airport (or Dong Hoi Railway Station) where your guide meets you for the 45-kilometer transfer to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. After checking into your riverside accommodation in Phong Nha village, head to the park’s Botanical Garden for your first taste of the karst jungle. Trek through primary forest trails, wade across the Vang Anh Stream, and climb to the top of the 30-meter Gio Waterfall for sweeping views over the limestone peaks. Learn about the park’s extraordinary biodiversity — home to over 2,700 plant species, including rare orchids and ancient cycads. Return to Phong Nha village for an evening stroll along the Son River and dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 2: Paradise Cave – Nuoc Mooc Spring Eco-Trail
After breakfast, drive 25 kilometers to Paradise Cave (Thien Duong Cave), discovered in 2005 by the British Cave Research Association. Descend via a wooden walkway into what is widely considered the most beautiful dry cave on Earth. Inside, a vast cathedral-like chamber stretches 31 kilometers, adorned with stalactites and stalagmites of every conceivable shape — crystalline curtains, giant pagoda formations, and delicate soda straws illuminated by soft lighting. Spend 2-3 hours exploring the first kilometer open to the public, each turn revealing more stunning formations. Day 3: Dark Cave Adventure – Phong Nha Cave by Dragon Boat
Today combines two of Phong Nha’s most exciting experiences. Begin at the Dark Cave (Hang Toi), where you strap into a harness and zip-line over the Chay River to reach the cave entrance. Inside, with only headlamps guiding your way, wade through waist-deep water and navigate narrow passages to reach a natural mud bath chamber deep within the cave. The therapeutic mineral mud is a highlight — float weightlessly in the dark, surrounded by ancient limestone. After washing off in the Chay River, enjoy riverside lunch with kayaking. In the afternoon, board a traditional dragon boat on the Son River for the 30-minute journey to Phong Nha Cave (the park’s namesake). The boat glides directly into the cave mouth, revealing a 7.7-kilometer water cave system with soaring 50-meter ceilings, underground sand beaches, and fascinating formations such as the ‘Lion,’ the ‘Fairy Caves,’ and the ‘Royal Court.’ Return at sunset for a farewell dinner.
Day 4: Son Doong Entrance Trail – Dong Hoi Departure
On your final morning, embark on a moderate trek to the entrance area of Son Doong Cave, the largest cave in the world discovered in 2009 (the full expedition requires a separate 6-day booking at $3,000). The 6-kilometer jungle trail passes through dense primary forest, crossing streams and offering glimpses of the massive dolines (collapsed cave ceilings) that reveal the hidden river below.
