Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in Tirana — The City of Colors

Arrive at Tirana International Airport (TIA). Transfer to your 4-star hotel in the city center. Afternoon orientation tour of Tirana: Skanderbeg Square with its equestrian statue and 18th-century Clock Tower, the Et’hem Bey Mosque with its unique frescoes, and the colorful facades of government buildings. Walk through Blloku district, the former communist elite neighborhood now transformed into Tirana’s hippest quarter. Evening: welcome dinner featuring traditional Albanian cuisine — byrek (flaky pie with cheese or spinach filling), tave kosi (yogurt-baked lamb), and desserts of baklava and kadaif. Overnight in Tirana.

Day 2: Kruja Castle & Transfer to Durres

Morning drive to Kruja (approximately 45 minutes), the spiritual home of Albanian national identity. Visit Kruja Castle, the stronghold of national hero Skanderbeg who held the fortress against three Ottoman sieges in the 15th century, becoming a European legend for his 25-year resistance. Explore the Skanderbeg Museum inside the castle, a striking modern building designed by Enver Hoxha’s daughter Pranvera, housing artifacts from Skanderbeg’s life and Albania’s medieval history. Walk through the Old Bazaar, a beautifully preserved 400-year-old Ottoman market street where craftsmen sell handmade carpets, filigree silver, copper goods, and traditional costumes. Afternoon: drive to Durres, Albania’s ancient port city on the Adriatic coast. Visit the Durres Amphitheater, the largest Roman amphitheater in the Balkans built in the 2nd century AD, with a capacity of 15,000-20,000 spectators. The amphitheater contains a rare early Christian chapel with well-preserved wall mosaics. Walk the Venetian Tower and the medieval city walls. Evening: seaside dinner on the Durres promenade. Overnight in Durres.

Day 3: Durres to Berat — City of a Thousand Windows

Morning at leisure in Durres. Walk the beach promenade or visit the Archaeological Museum. Then drive inland to Berat (approximately 1.5 hours). Berat is one of the most beautiful cities in the Balkans, its white Ottoman houses with rows of windows cascading down the hillside on both banks of the Osumi River. Afternoon comprehensive tour: Berat Castle, still inhabited after 2,400 years, with the Onufri Museum housing priceless icons. Walk through Mangalem Quarter, the historic Muslim neighborhood where some houses date from the 18th century. Cross the Gorica Bridge to the quiet Gorica Quarter. Visit the King Mosque and the Helveti Teqe, a Sufi lodge with beautifully carved wooden ceilings. Evening: wine tasting at Cobo Winery or a similar Berat winery, sampling local varieties Shesh i Bardhe and Shesh i Zi. Dinner in the historic quarter. Overnight in Berat.

Day 4: Berat to Saranda via Blue Eye — The Albanian Riviera

Scenic drive from Berat through the mountains of southern Albania to the Ionian coast. Stop at the Blue Eye (Syri i Kalter) — this mesmerizing spring of intensely turquoise water gushes from a deep karst hole, bubbling up at 18,400 liters per second. The water is so clear that you can see the deep blue shaft plunging into darkness. Continue to Saranda, the Riviera’s main town overlooking Corfu. Lunch at the seaside promenade. Afternoon: explore the ancient ruins of the Synagogue at the city center with its rare mosaic floor and the Lizard Fortress (Lekuresi) for panoramic views over Saranda, the islands of Ksamil, and the Greek island of Corfu. Evening: sunset at Lekuresi Castle restaurant, a popular spot for amazing views. Overnight in Saranda.

Day 5: Ksamil Beaches & Butrint Ancient City

Morning in paradise: Ksamil’s white sand beaches and four small islands set in water so turquoise it looks photoshopped. Swim in the warm Ionian Sea, kayak between the islands, or simply relax under an umbrella. The four islands are a protected marine area and the rocky islets are colonialized by Mediterranean vegetation and seabirds. Midday: drive to Butrint National Park, one of the Mediterranean’s greatest archaeological sites, set on a wooded peninsula surrounded by Lake Butrint and brackish wetlands. Walk through the Sanctuary of Asclepius and the Greek theater (3rd century BC), the Roman forum, the Byzantine baptistery with its magnificent mosaic pavement, the Great Basilica, and the Venetian triangular fortress at the top. Butrint has been a UNESCO site since 1992, recognized both for its archaeology and its natural habitat that supports over 800 plant species. Return to Saranda for a free evening. Overnight in Saranda/Ksamil area.

Day 6: Coastal Drive to Vlore — The Riviera Road

Drive the spectacular coastal road along the Albanian Riviera, considered one of Europe’s great drives. Stop at Porto Palermo to visit Ali Pasha’s well-preserved castle on its small island causeway. Continue through Himara with its lovely beach and charming Old Town, and Dhermi, perhaps the Riviera’s most beautiful village — whitewashed stone houses, a hilltop monastery, and a stunning beach framed by cliffs. Stop at Llogara National Park at 1,027 meters where the mountain meets the sea, with breathtaking views of both the Ionian and Adriatic coasts. Lunch at the Llogara Pass restaurant. Descend to Vlore, Albania’s historic first capital after independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912. Visit Independence Square and the monument marking where Ismail Qemali raised the Albanian flag. Evening: stroll Vlore’s Lungomare, the newly extended waterfront promenade. Overnight in Vlore.

Day 7: Vlore to Shkodra — Northern Highlands & Rozafa Castle

Longer drive north along the Adriatic coast through Fier and Durres, crossing central Albania to reach Shkodra, one of Europe’s oldest cities with a history spanning over 2,400 years. Afternoon: visit Rozafa Castle, perched on a rocky hill where the Buna and Drin rivers meet. According to legend, Rozafa, the wife of the youngest of three brothers building the castle, was walled into the foundation to appease the spirits — she agreed on the condition that one breast, one hand, and one foot remain exposed so she could nurse her baby, rock its cradle, and gesture farewell. The castle’s Illyrian-Illyrian walls date to the 4th century BC and the views over Lake Shkodra are magnificent. Explore Shkodra’s pedestrian center: the Marubi National Museum of Photography — Albania’s most important photography collection spanning 150 years — and the colorful Ottoman-era buildings. Walk the pedestrian promenade to the Ebu Beker Mosque. Evening: traditional Shkodra cuisine, including the famous carp from Lake Shkodra. Overnight in Shkodra.

Day 8: Shkodra to Tirana — Departure

Morning at leisure in Shkodra. Visit the artisan workshops where traditional filigree silver jewelry is made by hand using techniques passed down through generations. Then drive to Tirana (approximately 1.5 hours). If your departure flight is in the afternoon or evening, visit Bunk’Art 2, the Cold War bunker museum, or the Pyramid of Tirana, the former Enver Hoxha mausoleum controversially transformed in 2023 into a modern education and innovation center. Last-minute souvenir shopping for raki, mountain tea (caj mali), or traditional silver. Transfer to Tirana International Airport for your departure flight, carrying with you Albania’s 8-day story: from Illyrian castles to Ottoman bazaars, from ancient ruins to turquoise beaches, from communist bunkers to a nation reborn.
