Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Tirana to Koman Lake Ferry to Valbona

Early morning departure from Tirana and drive north to the Koman Lake dam. This 3-hour scenic drive takes you through the changing landscape from central Albania to the edge of the Albanian Alps. Board the Koman Lake ferry — regularly cited as one of the world’s most beautiful ferry journeys. The 2.5-hour cruise navigates through Koman Lake, a hydroelectric reservoir created in the 1970s by damming the Drin River. The ferry snakes through dramatic gorges where sheer limestone walls rise 1,500 meters on both sides, narrowing to just 100 meters wide in places. The route follows the original Drin River valley, now submerged, creating a landscape reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord in the heart of the Balkans. Watch for golden eagles soaring thermals above the cliffs. Arrive at Fierze dock and transfer a short distance into Valbona Valley. Check into a traditional stone guesthouse (bujtina) in the heart of the valley. Enjoy an authentic mountain dinner prepared by your hosts — slow-cooked lamb, cornbread, fresh cheese, and vegetables from the garden. Overnight in Valbona.

Day 2: Valbona Valley — Mountain Exploration & Village Life

Full day exploring Valbona Valley (Lugina e Valbones), one of the most pristine wilderness areas in Europe, nestled in the heart of Valbona Valley National Park. The valley is a classic U-shaped glacial valley framed by the jagged peaks of the Accursed Mountains, including Maja e Jezercës (2,694m), the highest peak visible in the completely Dinaric Alps range within Albania. Morning hike along valley trails through ancient beech forests and alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers in summer. Visit traditional stone houses and meet the local families who have lived in these mountains for generations, farming sheep and producing cheese on summer pastures. Afternoon options: hike to hidden waterfalls, visit the Valbona village center with its small ethnographic museum documenting mountain life, or simply relax at your guesthouse with views of the peaks. Enjoy a traditional dinner and learn about the kanun, Albania’s ancient code of customary law that governed mountain life for centuries, including the institution of the besa (word of honor) that offered protection even to enemies. Overnight in Valbona.

Day 3: The Great Hike — Valbona Pass to Theth

THE BIG DAY: the legendary Valbona-Theth hike, the most famous trek in the Albanian Alps. After an early breakfast, horses are loaded with luggage for the journey while you set off on foot. The 15km trail climbs steadily from Valbona through alpine pastures and into the rocky upper valley. The ascent gains approximately 1,000 meters to the Valbona Pass (Qafa e Valbones) at 1,795 meters. At the pass, the view is staggering — on one side, the Valbona Valley stretches back; on the other, Theth Valley opens below with its distinctive rocky peaks. This is the heart of the Accursed Mountains, and on a clear day the panorama includes Maja e Jezercës and the peaks marking the Montenegro border. Descend through changing terrain: first rocky slopes with endemic alpine flowers, then pine forests, and finally beech woods opening into Theth Valley. The entire hike takes 6-8 hours depending on fitness and photo stops. Arrive in Theth’s remote village, a settlement of just a few dozen families that was completely isolated until the road was built in the 1930s. Check into your traditional guesthouse. A hearty mountain feast and well-earned rest. Overnight in Theth.

Day 4: Theth National Park — Waterfalls & Kulla Towers

A more relaxed day exploring Theth National Park’s cultural and natural treasures. Morning walk to the Grunas Waterfall — a 25-meter cascade plunging over dramatic limestone formations at the head of a narrow canyon. The short hike (approximately 1 hour each way) passes through beech forest and open meadows with spectacular mountain views. Rest and lunch at a farmhouse producing local cheese and honey. Afternoon: explore Theth village’s cultural landmarks. Visit the Lock-In Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit), a four-story stone tower that is one of the most poignant artifacts of Albanian mountain history. Under the kanun, men targeted in blood feuds could temporarily seek safety in these towers — a unique form of sanctuary that could last months or years. The stone building is windowless at ground level, with narrow slits above, built solely for survival. Visit the small church, rebuilt on the original stone foundations after being destroyed during Enver Hoxha’s 1967 campaign to eliminate all religious sites. The church sits in a stunning mountain meadow framed by peaks. Evening: the guesthouse hosts a spirited evening with home-brewed raki, local music, and traditional dancing. Overnight in Theth.

Day 5: Theth to Tirana — Farewell to the Accursed Mountains

After a final mountain breakfast of bread still warm from the oven, honey, cheese, and eggs from the guesthouse hens, begin the journey back to civilization. The drive out of Theth through Thore Pass offers one last dose of dramatic mountain scenery — the 1,700-meter pass provides a final panorama of the peaks you’ve explored. Descend through the Shala Valley to Shkodra. Stop at Rozafa Castle, the 2,400-year-old Illyrian fortress where the Buna and Drin rivers meet, with panoramas over Lake Shkodra, the largest lake in the Balkans and shared with Montenegro. Brief visit to Shkodra’s pedestrian center and the Marubi National Museum of Photography. Continue to Tirana International Airport for your departure flight. As the mountains recede in the distance, you’ll carry with you the memory of the Valbona Pass, the silence of Koman gorges, the taste of mountain honey, and the extraordinary hospitality of Albania’s mountain people.
