Itinerary

Day 1: Santiago Arrival

Arrive at Santiago International Airport and transfer to your premium hotel in the Providencia district. In the afternoon, join a guided city tour beginning at the historic Plaza de Armas with its impressive Metropolitan Cathedral and the former National Congress building. Ride the funicular to the summit of San Cristobal Hill in the Metropolitan Park, where a 22-meter statue of the Virgin Mary overlooks sweeping views of Santiago with the snow-capped Andes as a dramatic backdrop. Continue to the bohemian Bellavista neighborhood, famous for its colorful street art, artisan shops, and lively restaurant scene. Welcome dinner at one of Santiago’s finest restaurants featuring contemporary Chilean cuisine paired with excellent local wines.

Day 2: Santiago to Punta Arenas

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight to Punta Arenas, located on the Brunswick Peninsula overlooking the legendary Strait of Magellan. Upon arrival, take a tour of this historic city, visiting the Plaza Munoz Gamero with its monument to Ferdinand Magellan — rub the toe of the Patagonian Indian statue for luck, as local tradition dictates. Visit the Salesian Museum with its fascinating collection of Patagonian natural history and indigenous artifacts. Day 5: Cross to Argentina & El Calafate

After breakfast, begin the journey across the border into Argentina, passing through the vast Patagonian steppe with its endless skies and estancias. The drive takes approximately five hours, with stops for photos of the dramatic landscape and a packed lunch along the way. Arrive in El Calafate, a charming town on the shores of Lake Argentino, the largest freshwater lake in Argentina. Check into your hotel and spend the afternoon exploring the town’s main strip with its chocolate shops, artisan markets, and glacier-themed museums. The Laguna Nimez bird sanctuary on the edge of town offers excellent birdwatching, including flamingos and black-necked swans.

Day 6: Perito Moreno Glacier

This is one of the great days of travel — the full-day visit to Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Drive to the glacier and walk the extensive network of viewing platforms that offer spectacular perspectives of the 30-kilometer-long, 5-kilometer-wide ice wall. Unlike most glaciers on Earth, Perito Moreno is stable — neither advancing nor retreating significantly. Watch and listen as massive chunks of ice calve from the 70-meter-high face, crashing into the waters of Lake Argentino with thunderous roars that echo across the landscape. For those seeking an even closer encounter, an optional boat trip approaches the glacier wall for a perspective on its immense scale. Day 7: El Calafate to Ushuaia

Transfer to El Calafate Airport for the flight south to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, perched on the shores of the Beagle Channel and backed by the Martial Mountains. Upon arrival, take a brief orientation tour of the city, driving along the waterfront and through the main streets. Visit the Museo Maritimo y del Presidio, housed in the former prison that gives Ushuaia much of its frontier character, to learn about the city’s history as a penal colony and its maritime heritage. The park encompasses 63,000 hectares of dramatic scenery, from subantarctic forests of lenga, guindo, and nire trees to peat bogs, beaver dams, and stunning coastal views. Board a catamaran at the Ushuaia dock for a cruise through the legendary Beagle Channel, named after the HMS Beagle on which Charles Darwin sailed these waters in the 1830s. The cruise passes the iconic Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, standing sentinel over a small archipelago, and continues to sea lion and cormorant colonies on rocky islets where hundreds of these photogenic animals bask and nest. Watch for Magellanic penguins, albatross, and petrels riding the channel’s winds. The views back toward Ushuaia and the surrounding mountains are spectacular from the water. Day 10: Ushuaia Departure

As you fly northward over the vast wilderness of Patagonia — the glaciers, lakes, mountains, and steppes you have explored over the past ten days — reflect on a journey that has taken you from Santiago to the southernmost city on Earth, across two countries and through some of the most spectacular landscapes on the planet.
