Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Malta
Airport pickup and transfer to your hotel in Valletta. Evening: orientation walk through Republic Street and the Upper Barrakka Gardens for views over the Grand Harbour. Overnight in Valletta.
Day 2: Valletta — The Fortress Capital
Guided walking tour of Valletta. St. John’s Co-Cathedral with Caravaggio’s masterpiece “The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist” (his only signed work). The Grand Master’s Palace and its Armoury. Upper Barrakka Gardens for the noon cannon firing. Afternoon free to explore the narrow streets, cafes, and shops of Europe’s smallest capital city. Overnight in Valletta.
Day 3: Mdina, Rabat & Mosta
Morning: Mdina — Malta’s silent medieval capital. Walk the car-free streets, visit the Mdina Cathedral, and see Game of Thrones filming locations. Rabat’s St. Paul’s Catacombs (4th century Roman burial complex). Afternoon: Mosta Dome (Rotunda of Mosta) — one of the world’s largest unsupported domes (37m diameter), larger than St. Paul’s in London. The church’s miracle: during WWII, a 500kg German bomb pierced the dome during a packed mass but failed to explode — a replica bomb is on display. Overnight in Valletta.
Day 4: Gozo — Malta’s Sister Island
Full day excursion. Ggantija Temples (3600 BC, UNESCO, older than the pyramids). The Citadella in Victoria. Xlendi Bay for a swim. Dwejra’s Inland Sea and the former site of the Azure Window. Taste Gozitan cheese (gbejniet) and local wine. Overnight in Valletta.
Day 5: Blue Grotto, Marsaxlokk & Three Cities
Morning: Blue Grotto boat ride into the fluorescent blue sea caves. Continue to Marsaxlokk, the colorful fishing village with its traditional luzzu boats painted with the Eye of Osiris. Afternoon: the Three Cities across the Grand Harbour — Birgu, Senglea, Cospicua — with their narrow streets and waterfront views. Overnight in Valletta.
Day 6: Hagar Qim Temples & Dingli Cliffs
Morning: Hagar Qim and Mnajdra megalithic temples (UNESCO) on a clifftop above the sea — these 5,600-year-old stone temples are aligned with the solstices. Afternoon: Dingli Cliffs (Malta’s highest point) and the clifftop chapel. Optional: Ta’Qali Crafts Village for Maltese glass-blowing and filigree silver. Farewell dinner in Valletta. Overnight in Valletta.
