Itinerary

Day 1: Puerto Natales to Refugio Grey

Depart Puerto Natales in the early morning for the scenic three-hour drive to Torres del Paine National Park. Enter the park and take a catamaran across the brilliant turquoise waters of Lake Pehoe to Refugio Paine Grande. From here, begin the W-Trek heading north along the shores of Grey Lake. The 11-kilometer trail passes through ancient lenga forests and across rocky moraines, with the Grey Glacier coming into view as you approach. After approximately four hours of hiking, reach Refugio Grey, your home for the night. Check in, enjoy a hot dinner in the communal dining room, and watch icebergs drift by on the lake below. If time and energy permit, continue to the glacier viewpoint for an up-close look at the massive ice wall.

Day 2: Grey to French Valley

After breakfast, begin the return hike from Refugio Grey back to Paine Grande, retracing your steps along Grey Lake and enjoying morning views of the glacier in a different light. From Paine Grande, continue east into the heart of the W-Trek, following the shores of Lake Skottsberg toward the entrance of the French Valley. The trail gradually climbs through forests of Antarctic beech, with views of the Cuernos del Paine (the Horns) growing larger with every step. Arrive at Campamento Italiano, a rustic backcountry camp at the base of the valley, and continue to the French Valley lookout — a spectacular vantage point surrounded by hanging glaciers on the flanks of Paine Grande and the Cuernos. After approximately seven hours of hiking, reach Refugio Los Cuernos or Frances for a well-deserved dinner and rest.

Day 3: French Valley to Refugio Chileno

Begin the day with a deep exploration of the French Valley. Hike up to the Mirador Britanico for an awe-inspiring 360-degree panorama of the entire Paine Massif — from the towers to the north, the horns in the center, and the vast Southern Patagonian Ice Field to the west. This is widely considered one of the most beautiful viewpoints in all of Patagonia. Descend from the French Valley and continue east along the shores of Lake Nordenskjold, crossing suspension bridges and open meadows where guanacos often graze. After approximately eight hours of hiking, transfer by vehicle to Refugio Chileno, strategically located on the approach to the base of the towers. Enjoy a hearty dinner and prepare for the pre-dawn start tomorrow.

Day 4: Base Torres Sunrise Trek & Return

Wake at 4:00 AM for the culmination of the W-Trek — the sunrise ascent to the base of the Torres del Paine. Begin hiking by headlamp through the Ascencio Valley, the trail climbing steadily through dark lenga forests. As dawn approaches, emerge above the treeline and navigate the final boulder field to the edge of the glacial lake at the base of the three towers. Watch in awe as the first rays of sunlight strike the granite spires, turning them from dark silhouettes to brilliant orange and gold. This is the iconic Patagonian moment that trekkers dream of. After time for photos and quiet contemplation, descend back to Refugio Chileno, collect your gear, and continue down to the park entrance. Transfer back to Puerto Natales, arriving in the evening for a celebration dinner and a well-earned rest.
