Day 1: Arrive Lagos — Megacity Rising
Arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Lagos is overwhelming in the best way — 20 million people, chaotic traffic, the continent’s biggest economy, and an infectious creative energy. Transfer to your hotel on Victoria Island. Evening: orientation drive through Ikoyi and Victoria Island, past the striking Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge. Dinner at a local restaurant featuring jollof rice (Nigeria’s claim in the great West African jollof wars), suya-spiced meat skewers, and cold Star beer. Overnight Lagos.
Day 2: Lagos — Markets, Museums & Makoko Water Village
Full day in Africa’s largest city. Morning: visit the National Museum Lagos, home to the extraordinary Nok terracotta sculptures (dating from 500 BC — among the oldest figurative art in sub-Saharan Africa), Benin bronzes, and Ife heads. Continue to Nike Art Gallery, a four-story treasure house of Nigerian art with over 10,000 works — textiles, paintings, sculptures — curated by the legendary Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye. Afternoon: boat journey to Makoko, the famous “Venice of Africa” — a sprawling water community where tens of thousands live in houses on stilts above Lagos Lagoon. The children wave; the canoes weave between buildings; it’s unlike anywhere else on earth. Return to Victoria Island for sunset at a beach bar. Overnight Lagos.
Day 3: Badagry — The Point of No Return
Drive west along the coast to Badagry, one of West Africa’s most significant historical towns. Badagry was a major slave port from the early 16th century, where an estimated 550,000 enslaved Africans were shipped to the Americas. Visit the Badagry Heritage Museum (housed in a colonial building from 1863), then walk the Slave Route to the Point of No Return at Gberefu Beach — the actual beach where captives boarded ships. The well where enslaved people drank their last water on African soil (the Attenuation Well, said to erase memories of home) still stands. It’s a heavy, essential morning. Afternoon: drive to Abeokuta (meaning “under the rock”), capital of Ogun State. Overnight Abeokuta.
Day 4: Abeokuta — Olumo Rock & Adire Fabric
Morning: climb Olumo Rock, a massive granite outcrop that rises 137 meters above Abeokuta. The rock served as a natural fortress for the Egba people during inter-tribal wars in the 19th century; you can still see the shrine caves and natural hiding places. The panoramic view over the city’s rusted tin roofs is spectacular. Afternoon: visit Itoku Market, the center of Adire production — intricate indigo-dyed fabrics created using traditional tie-dye and resist-paste techniques. Watch artisans at work and shop for one-of-a-kind textiles. Continue to Ibadan, Nigeria’s third-largest city and historically one of the largest cities in Africa. Overnight Ibadan.
Day 5: Ile-Ife — The Birthplace of the Yoruba
Morning drive to Ile-Ife, the spiritual heart of the Yoruba people. According to Yoruba cosmology, Ile-Ife is where the god Obatala descended from heaven to create the earth, and where Oduduwa became the first ruler. Visit the Ooni’s Palace, seat of the Ooni of Ife (the spiritual leader of all Yoruba people worldwide — roughly 40 million people). The palace compound buzzes with courtiers, drummers, and market women. Afternoon: explore the Ife Museum, home to the famous Ife bronze and terracotta heads — sculptural masterpieces from the 12th-15th centuries so realistic that European archaeologists initially refused to believe they were African-made. Evening: drive to Oshogbo. Overnight Oshogbo.
Day 6: Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove — The Last Yoruba Forest
Full day at the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 75-hectare stretch of primary forest along the Osun River is the last remaining sacred grove of the Yoruba religion — a living temple where the goddess Osun (goddess of fertility, rivers, and love) is still worshipped. Follow winding forest paths past dozens of shrines, sculptures, and sanctuaries created by Austrian artist Susanne Wenger (who moved here in 1950, adopted the name Adunni Olorisha, and became a Yoruba priestess). The main shrine with its terracotta figures is hauntingly beautiful. The annual Osun Festival draws thousands of pilgrims — the energy of the grove is palpable even on quiet days. Afternoon: visit the nearby Nike Art Centre Oshogbo, a remarkable artists’ community. Overnight Oshogbo.
Day 7: Oshogbo to Abuja — Along the Niger River
A scenic drive day heading northeast along the Niger River. Stop at Lokoja, a historic town at the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers — the spot where the two great rivers merge, identified by explorer Mungo Park in the 1790s. Visit the colonial cemetery where British officials from the Royal Niger Company are buried, and Lord Lugard’s first headquarters (Nigeria was named by Lugard’s wife in 1897). Continue to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital since 1991 — a planned city with wide boulevards, modernist architecture, and the dramatic Aso Rock (a 400-meter monolith) as its backdrop. Overnight Abuja.
Day 8: Abuja — Modern Capital, Ancient Roots
Full day exploring Abuja. Morning: visit the National Mosque (golden dome, four minarets, open to visitors outside prayer times) and the National Christian Centre with its striking neo-Gothic architecture. Continue to Millennium Park, a 32-hectare green space designed by Italian architect Manfredi Nicoletti. Afternoon: experience Abuja’s famous arts and crafts market for traditional pottery, leatherwork, and the distinctive Hausa embroidery. Visit Zuma Rock on the outskirts — a 725-meter monolith known as the “Gateway to Abuja,” considered one of the Seven Wonders of Africa (it even appears on Nigeria’s 100 Naira note). Day 9: Departure from Abuja
