6-Day Northern Laos Explorer: Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw & Muang Ngoi

Day 1: Arrive Luang Prabang

Arrive in Luang Prabang. Afternoon: Wat Xieng Thong and Mount Phousi for sunset over the Mekong. Night market for dinner and souvenirs. Overnight Luang Prabang.

Day 2: Luang Prabang — Alms & Waterfalls

Pre-dawn alms-giving ceremony. After breakfast, drive to Kuang Si Waterfall — swim in the tiered turquoise pools, visit the bear sanctuary. Afternoon Mekong cruise to Pak Ou Caves. Sunset return. Overnight Luang Prabang.

Day 3: Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw — The 100 Waterfalls Trek

Morning drive 3.5 hours north through spectacular mountain scenery to Nong Khiaw, a small village dramatically set beneath towering limestone karsts on the banks of the Nam Ou River. Afternoon: “100 Waterfalls Trek” — a guided hike through jungle and streams to a series of cascading waterfalls where you can swim and climb. The karst scenery here rivals anything in Southeast Asia. Sunset from the Nong Khiaw Viewpoint (optional, steep 1-hour climb) for one of the most spectacular panoramas in Laos. Overnight Nong Khiaw.

Day 4: Boat to Muang Ngoi — The Roadless Village

Early morning boat 1.5 hours up the Nam Ou River to Muang Ngoi Neua, a village accessible only by boat, with no cars and electricity limited to generators. The boat journey through limestone gorges is one of Southeast Asia’s great river trips. Arrive and settle into a simple guesthouse. Afternoon: hike through surrounding rice paddies and karst landscapes to nearby Tham Kang cave (used as a bomb shelter during the Secret War). Evening: dinner at a riverside restaurant, watching the Nam Ou flow past in the darkness. The silence here — no traffic, no city noise — is profound. Overnight Muang Ngoi.

Day 5: Muang Ngoi Village Trek & Return

Morning trek to a Khmu hill-tribe village, walking through forests and fields with your local guide. Learn about Khmu animist traditions, forest gathering, and the challenges of remote village life. The Khmu are Laos’ original inhabitants, predating the ethnic Lao migration. Afternoon boat back to Nong Khiaw, then road return to Luang Prabang (arriving evening). Farewell dinner. Overnight Luang Prabang.

Day 6: Departure

Morning at leisure — last chance for Lao coffee and croissants at a French bakery. Transfer to Luang Prabang Airport for departure.
