7-Day Republic of Congo: Odzala-Kokoua Gorilla Trek & Rainforest Immersion

Day 1: Arrive Brazzaville

Arrive in Brazzaville. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon at leisure to explore the city or rest after your flight. Evening briefing with your expedition leader about the journey to Odzala. Overnight Brazzaville.

Day 2: Fly to Odzala — Ngaga Camp

Charter flight from Brazzaville to Odzala-Kokoua National Park (approximately 2 hours), flying over the unbroken green canopy of the Congo Basin—one of the most extraordinary aerial views on Earth. Transfer by 4×4 to Ngaga Camp, set in a forest clearing (baï) surrounded by towering marantaceae forest. The camp’s six elevated rooms are built on wooden decks with views into the rainforest canopy. Afternoon orientation walk and briefing on gorilla tracking protocols. Odzala’s gorillas have been studied for over two decades by primatologist Dr. Magda Bermejo, creating one of the most successful gorilla habituation programs in Central Africa. Overnight Ngaga Camp.

Day 3: Gorilla Tracking — Ngaga Forest

Pre-dawn breakfast before setting out with expert Ba’Aka trackers whose forest knowledge is legendary. The gorilla groups around Ngaga number 15-25 individuals, with impressive silverbacks leading multi-female families. The tracking can take 1-3 hours—the forest here is dense, the terrain undulating—but the encounter is worth every step. Watching habituated western lowland gorillas going about their daily lives: feeding on marantaceae stems, mothers carrying infants, juveniles play-fighting in the undergrowth, the silverback watching over all with quiet authority. You spend one precious hour in their company before returning to camp. Afternoon at leisure—rest, process your photos, or take an interpretive forest walk. Overnight Ngaga Camp.

Day 4: Second Gorilla Trek — Different Group

Second morning of gorilla tracking with a different habituated group. Each encounter is completely different—today you might witness the silverback displaying (chest-beating, branch-breaking, and the remarkable ‘chest-drumming’ vocalization that echoes through the forest), or find the group high in fruit trees, or watch a mother nursing a tiny infant. The habituation at Odzala is deep enough that the gorillas accept human observers as neutral elements of their environment—the resulting behavior is utterly natural. Afternoon forest walk with Ba’Aka guides demonstrating their extraordinary skills: identifying medicinal plants, reading animal signs, and demonstrating net-hunting techniques. Overnight Ngaga Camp.

Day 5: Transfer to Lango Camp — Baï Experience

Morning transfer through the park to Lango Camp, set on the edge of a vast saline-rich baï (forest clearing). These baïs are the rainforest’s great wildlife theaters—open areas where animals congregate to access mineral salts essential to their diet. Settle into your elevated room overlooking the baï, where you can literally watch wildlife from your deck. Afternoon and evening at the baï observation platform: forest elephants emerge from the rainforest to dig for minerals, red river hogs root in the mud, forest buffalo graze, and with extraordinary luck, gorillas may visit the baï at dawn or dusk. Overnight Lango Camp.

Day 6: Kayak Safari & Forest Walks

Morning kayak safari on the Lekoli River, gliding silently through a flooded forest landscape of cathedral-like proportions. The water here is dark with tannins, the overhanging trees draped in epiphytes, the air full of bird calls. Forest elephants often visit the river’s edge—seeing one from a kayak at water level is unforgettable. Afternoon guided forest walk focusing on Odzala’s smaller wonders: the incredible insects (including Goliath beetles), the 430+ bird species (including the great blue turaco and black-casqued hornbill), and the remarkable plant adaptations that make the Congo Basin rainforest one of Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystems. Farewell dinner at the camp. Overnight Lango Camp.

Day 7: Return to Brazzaville & Departure

Morning 4×4 transfer to the airstrip. Charter flight back to Brazzaville, watching the forest canopy recede beneath you—your last view of one of Africa’s greatest wildernesses. Transfer to your hotel or the international airport for departure.
