14-Day Sri Lanka Grand Wildlife & Culture: Complete Island Safari

Day 1: Arrive Colombo — Negombo

Arrive Bandaranaike International Airport. Short transfer to Negombo, a coastal town with Portuguese and Dutch colonial heritage. Afternoon at leisure—walk the lagoon, visit the fish market, or relax on the beach. Evening seafood dinner and trip briefing. Overnight Negombo.

Day 2: Wilpattu National Park — Leopard & Sloth Bear Safari

Early morning drive to Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka’s largest and one of its oldest. Wilpattu’s landscape of natural lakes (villu) set within dense scrub creates ideal habitat for leopards and sloth bears. Full-day jeep safari. Wilpattu typically offers fewer visitors but equally excellent wildlife viewing compared to Yala. Leopards here are often seen near the villus, and the park is one of the best places in Asia to see the elusive sloth bear. Overnight near Wilpattu.

Day 3: Anuradhapura Ancient City

Morning exploration of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree—grown from a cutting of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment, brought here in 288 BC—is the oldest historically documented tree in the world. The massive Ruwanwelisaya stupa, the 1,600 stone columns of the Brazen Palace, and the Samadhi Buddha statue reflect a civilization of extraordinary sophistication. Evening at leisure. Overnight Anuradhapura.

Day 4: Sigiriya Rock & Minneriya Elephant Gathering

Morning climb of Sigiriya Lion Rock fortress. Afternoon jeep safari in Minneriya National Park for the world-famous ‘Elephant Gathering’—one of the largest congregations of Asian elephants anywhere, with up to 300 individuals converging around the reservoir (best July-October). Even outside peak season, Minneriya reliably delivers elephant sightings. Overnight Sigiriya.

Day 5: Polonnaruwa & Dambulla

Morning at Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s medieval capital (11th-13th centuries), a UNESCO city of well-preserved ruins including the Gal Vihara—four colossal Buddha statues carved from a single granite cliff face. Afternoon at Dambulla Cave Temple, five caves with Buddha statues and ceiling frescoes. Drive to Kandy for the evening. Overnight Kandy.

Day 6: Kandy — Temple of the Tooth & Peradeniya Gardens

Morning at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, then the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. Afternoon free to explore Kandy—the lakeside walk, the bustling market, or the Bahirawakanda Buddha statue overlooking the city. Evening traditional Kandyan dance performance. Overnight Kandy.

Day 7: Tea Country — Nuwara Eliya

Scenic train journey (or drive) through misty tea plantations to Nuwara Eliya. Visit a tea factory with tasting. Afternoon walk through Nuwara Eliya’s colonial-era buildings: the Hill Club, the Post Office, and Gregory Lake. Overnight Nuwara Eliya.

Day 8: Horton Plains & World’s End — Transfer to Yala

Pre-dawn departure for Horton Plains National Park, a unique high-altitude plateau at 2,100 meters. The 9.5km circular walk takes you through cloud forest and montane grasslands to World’s End—an 880-meter sheer cliff drop with views to the southern coast on clear mornings. The endemic purple-faced langur and Sri Lanka white-eye are common. Afternoon drive to Yala. Overnight Yala safari lodge.

Day 9: Yala National Park — Full Day Leopard Safari

Full-day jeep safari in Yala National Park—the world’s best place for wild leopard sightings. Morning and afternoon drives maximize your chances. Between safaris, relax at the lodge pool. Overnight Yala.

Day 10: Bundala National Park — Ramsar Wetland & Flamingos

Morning at Bundala National Park, a Ramsar-designated wetland of international importance. This coastal park hosts up to 20,000 migratory shorebirds, including greater flamingos (November-March). The lagoons teem with crocodiles, and elephants often wade through the wetlands. Bundala offers a completely different ecosystem and wildlife set from Yala, just 45 minutes away. Overnight near Yala.

Day 11: Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home

Morning transfer to Udawalawe National Park. Unlike Yala’s dry scrub, Udawalawe’s open grasslands and reservoir reliably deliver elephant sightings—it’s rare to leave without seeing dozens. Visit the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned elephant calves are rehabilitated for release back into the wild. The 3 PM feeding time is unforgettable—tiny elephants running for their bottles. Overnight near Udawalawe.

Day 12: Sinharaja Rainforest — UNESCO Biodiversity Hotspot

Full day in Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Sri Lanka’s last viable area of primary tropical rainforest. This is a birder’s paradise: 19 of Sri Lanka’s 33 endemic bird species live here, including the Sri Lanka blue magpie, red-faced malkoha, and green-billed coucal. The forest also harbors purple-faced langurs, giant squirrels, and a dazzling array of butterflies, amphibians, and orchids. A guided nature walk reveals the rainforest’s staggering biodiversity. Overnight near Sinharaja.

Day 13: Mirissa Whale Watching

Morning whale-watching excursion from Mirissa. The deep waters off Sri Lanka’s south coast are one of the world’s best locations for blue whale sightings, with November-April being peak season. Afternoon at leisure on Mirissa beach, or visit the nearby stilt fishermen at Koggala—an iconic Sri Lankan image. Farewell dinner at a beachfront restaurant. Overnight Mirissa.

Day 14: Galle Fort & Departure

Morning at Galle Fort, walking the Dutch-built ramparts and exploring cobblestone streets lined with colonial architecture now housing boutiques, galleries, and excellent cafés. Afternoon transfer to Colombo Airport for departure.
