Day 1: Arrive Colombo — Transfer to Sigiriya
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport. Your driver-guide meets you for the transfer to Sigiriya in the heart of the Cultural Triangle (approx. 4 hours). En-route stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to watch rescued elephants bathing in the river—a quintessential Sri Lankan experience. Evening settle into your hotel near Sigiriya. Day 2: Sigiriya Lion Rock & Village Safari
Early morning climb of Sigiriya Lion Rock, the 5th-century fortress-palace rising 200 meters from the jungle. The frescoes of the ‘Sigiriya Maidens’ and the panoramic views from the summit are unforgettable. Afternoon village safari—travel by bullock cart through paddy fields, take a catamaran ride on a village lake, and enjoy a traditional cooking demonstration. At dusk, optional visit to Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park for the famous ‘Elephant Gathering,’ where up to 300 wild elephants congregate around the reservoir (seasonal, best July-October). Day 3: Dambulla Cave Temple & Kandy
Morning at Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO site with five caves containing 153 Buddha statues and stunning ceiling frescoes spanning 2,100 square meters. Afternoon drive to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Buddhism’s holiest shrine in Sri Lanka. Day 4: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya — Tea Country
Morning visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, 147 acres of tropical flora including the famous avenue of royal palms and a giant Javan fig tree covering 2,500 square meters. Then the scenic train journey (or drive) through misty tea plantations to Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka’s ‘Little England.’ Visit a working tea factory to learn how Ceylon tea is withered, rolled, fermented, and graded. Afternoon stroll through Nuwara Eliya’s colonial-era streets. Overnight Nuwara Eliya.
Day 5: Transfer to Yala — Afternoon Safari
Morning drive through the southern hill country toward Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife reserve. Stop at the Rawana waterfall along the way. Check into your safari lodge near the park boundary. Afternoon jeep safari in Yala Block 1, home to the highest concentration of leopards in the world. Your experienced tracker navigates the network of tracks and waterholes where leopards are most frequently seen. Also keep watch for sloth bears, elephants, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species including painted storks and Sri Lankan junglefowl (the national bird). Overnight Yala safari lodge.
Day 6: Full Day Yala — Leopard Quest
Full-day jeep safari maximizing leopard sightings. Morning drive (6:00 AM-10:00 AM) when leopards are most active, patrolling their territories and hunting. Return to the lodge for lunch and a siesta during the mid-day heat. Afternoon drive (2:00 PM-6:00 PM) to different zones of the park. Yala’s leopards have become remarkably habituated to jeeps, allowing extraordinarily close observation of Asia’s apex predator in the wild. Spotting a leopard draped over a tree branch or padding down a forest track is the kind of wildlife encounter that stays with you forever. Overnight Yala.
Day 7: Mirissa — Blue Whale Watching
Early morning departure for Mirissa on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Board a whale-watching vessel for a morning on the Indian Ocean (best season November-April). The waters off Mirissa and Dondra Head are one of the world’s most reliable locations for seeing blue whales—the largest animal ever to have lived—within sight of land. Spinner dolphins often accompany the boat, and sperm whales, Bryde’s whales, and orcas are also possible. Afternoon at leisure on Mirissa’s palm-fringed beach. Farewell seafood dinner by the sea. Day 8: Galle Fort & Departure
Morning exploration of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Portuguese in 1588 and fortified by the Dutch. Walk the ramparts, explore the maze of boutique shops and cafés in restored colonial buildings. Afternoon transfer to Colombo Airport for departure.
