Day 1: Windhoek — Namibia’s Cosmopolitan Capital
Arrive Windhoek. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon walking tour of the capital: Christuskirche, Independence Memorial Museum, and the vibrant Katutura township — a National Geographic-supported community visit to a local market and shebeen (traditional pub) for an authentic introduction to Namibian urban culture. Welcome dinner. Overnight Windhoek.
Day 2: Sossusvlei — The World’s Oldest Desert
Drive south into the Namib Desert, the oldest desert on Earth at 55 million years. Stop at Solitaire for its famous apple pie. Cross the Tropic of Capricorn. Afternoon arrival at a desert lodge. Sunset walk to Elim Dune — watch the sand transform from gold to crimson as the sun sets. Overnight Sesriem area.
Day 3: Sossusvlei & Deadvlei — Dune Kingdom
Pre-dawn departure into the dune sea. Climb Dune 45 or the massive Big Daddy (325m) for sunrise. Walk across Deadvlei — arguably the world’s most photogenic landscape — where 900-year-old camelthorn tree skeletons stand frozen in a white clay pan against red dunes. Afternoon visit to Sesriem Canyon. Evening astronomy session — Namibia’s skies are among the darkest on Earth, revealing the Milky Way in breathtaking detail. Overnight Sesriem area.
Day 4: Walvis Bay & Swakopmund
Drive through the changing Namib landscapes. Visit Walvis Bay Lagoon for flamingo photography — thousands of pink birds with massive dunes as backdrop. Continue to Swakopmund. Afternoon orientation walk: German colonial architecture, the pier, the lighthouse. Evening at a traditional restaurant. Overnight Swakopmund.
Day 5: Skeleton Coast & Cape Cross
Drive north along the legendary Skeleton Coast. Visit the Zeila shipwreck. Continue to Cape Cross — walk the boardwalk above a colony of more than 200,000 Cape fur seals. The sheer biomass of marine mammals is staggering. Return to Swakopmund for an afternoon at leisure or optional dolphin cruise. Overnight Swakopmund.
Day 6: Swakopmund to Etosha
Long but spectacular drive from the coast to Etosha National Park. Pass through the dramatic landscapes of the interior — from coastal fog to arid savannah. Stop at Outjo, a classic Namibian farming town. Arrive near Etosha. Afternoon game drive. Overnight near Etosha.
Day 7: Etosha National Park — Full-Day Safari
Predawn start for the best wildlife viewing. Full-day safari in Etosha: Okaukuejo, the Etosha Pan viewpoint, and multiple waterholes. Search for the Big Four (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino — no buffalo here), plus giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and the rare black-faced impala. Lunch at a rest camp. Evening at the floodlit waterhole watching rhinos emerge from darkness. Overnight Etosha area.
Day 8: Etosha — Eastern Sector & Conservation Talk
Morning game drive in Etosha’s eastern sector. Afternoon visit to the AfriCat Foundation (where possible) to learn about Namibia’s cheetah and leopard conservation efforts — a National Geographic Journeys-supported initiative. Farewell dinner under the stars. Overnight near Etosha.
Day 9: Return to Windhoek
Final breakfast in the bush. Drive south to Windhoek. Time permitting, visit the craft market for last-minute souvenirs. Transfer to Windhoek International Airport for departure.
