Day 1: Arrive Socotra — First Alien Impressions
Arrive at Hadibu Airport aboard the weekly flight from Abu Dhabi. First glimpse of Socotra’s otherworldly landscape from the air — stark mountains, deep wadis, and turquoise coastline. Transfer to camp. Afternoon visit to Delisha Beach — a pristine white sand beach where the Arabian Sea meets Socotra’s dramatic coastline. First swim in the crystal-clear waters. Orientation briefing under the stars. Camp at Delisha.
Day 2: Dixam Plateau — The Dragon Blood Forest
Drive 1,000m up into the Hajhir Mountains to the Dixam Plateau — the realm of the Dragon Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari), Socotra’s most famous endemic species. These bizarre umbrella-shaped trees bleed dark red resin used for centuries as medicine, dye, and varnish for Stradivarius violins. Walk through groves of ancient trees, some over 500 years old. Visit the sheer limestone canyon of Wadi Dirhur with its Desert Rose (Adenium obesum socotranum) — swollen-trunked trees with brilliant pink flowers growing directly from rocks. Camp on the plateau at 800m.
Day 3: Wadi Kalisan & Homhil — Infinity Pools & Bottle Trees
Morning drive to Homhil Protected Area — a natural wonderland of endemic plants. Hike through forests of Cucumber Trees (Dendrosicyos socotrana) — bizarre bottle-shaped trees unique to Socotra. Reach the famous infinity pool — a natural freshwater pool at the cliff edge overlooking the Arabian Sea 300m below. Swim while gazing at the infinite ocean horizon. Afternoon: continue to Wadi Kalisan for more freshwater pools and the endemic Socotra Sunbird. Camp at Dihamri Marine Protected Area.
Day 4: Dihamri — Underwater Galapagos
Full day at Dihamri — Socotra’s premier marine protected area. Snorkel among some of the world’s richest coral reefs with over 250 species of coral and 700 species of fish. Spot parrotfish, moray eels, rays, and if lucky, dolphins. The coral gardens here are among the most pristine in the Indian Ocean. Afternoon relaxation on the beach. Optional second snorkeling session. Camp at Dihamri.
Day 5: Hoq Cave — The Subterranean Cathedral
Morning drive along the northern coast to the village of Terbak. Begin the 2-hour hike up to Hoq Cave — one of the world’s largest limestone caves. The entrance is a massive opening in the mountainside. Inside: a cathedral-like cavern stretching 3km deep with stalactites, stalagmites, and ancient inscriptions dating back 2,000 years — evidence of Indian Ocean trade routes passing through Socotra. The cave’s formations resemble frozen waterfalls. Return hike. Camp at Arher.
Day 6: Arher Dunes — Where Desert Meets Ocean
Wake up at Arher — one of the most spectacular locations on Earth. Here, massive white sand dunes (100m high) tumble directly into the turquoise Arabian Sea. Climb the dunes for panoramic views of the meeting of desert and ocean. Swim, sandboard down the dunes into the sea, and relax on this pristine beach that you’ll likely have entirely to yourself. Afternoon visit to a local fishing village. Evening camp at Arher — watch the sunset paint the white dunes gold.
Day 7: Detwah Lagoon & Qalansiyah — Socotra’s Crown Jewel
Drive to the far west of Socotra to Qalansiyah — the island’s second-largest settlement. Visit Detwah Lagoon — considered one of the most beautiful beaches on Earth. This protected lagoon is a brilliant turquoise pool separated from the Arabian Sea by a narrow sand spit. Kayak in the calm lagoon, spot stingrays and eagle rays in the shallows, and walk the pristine sand spit to the open ocean. Afternoon: hike along the cliffs overlooking the lagoon for the iconic Socotra photograph — turquoise lagoon, white sand, deep blue ocean. Farewell camp at Qalansiyah.
Day 8: Departure
Morning drive back to Hadibu. Visit the local market for last souvenirs — Dragon Blood resin, Socotri frankincense, and handmade crafts. Transfer to Hadibu Airport. Fly out over the alien landscape that has captured imaginations for centuries.
