Day 1: Arrive Christmas Island
Fly from Honolulu (Fiji Airways via Nadi) to Cassidy International Airport on Kiritimati (Christmas Island), Republic of Kiribati. The approach reveals the world’s largest coral atoll — 640 square kilometers of lagoon and flats stretching to the horizon. Transfer to Christmas Island Lodge. Afternoon gear setup and orientation. Evening briefing on tides, flats, and target species. Welcome dinner of fresh tuna sashimi.
Days 2-7: Six Days of World-Class Flats Fishing
Each day follows the tides — depart early morning to reach the flats as the tide pushes in. Your experienced guide navigates the seemingly endless flats to find tailing bonefish, cruising trevally, and the famously challenging triggerfish.
Target Species:
• Bonefish — The main quarry. Kiritimati bones average 4-6 lbs with 8-10+ lb fish regularly encountered. The sheer numbers on some flats are staggering — pods of 50-100+ fish are common.
• Giant Trevally (GT) — The ultimate flats predator. These 30-80+ lb fish patrol the lagoon edges and reef passes. A GT eat is explosive — pure adrenaline.
• Bluefin Trevally — Smaller than GT but equally aggressive, these golden flanked speedsters are a prized catch.
• Triggerfish — The “bonefish of the Pacific” — notoriously difficult to hook and one of fly fishing’s greatest challenges.
• Milkfish — The “ghost of the flats,” feeding on algae with their lips barely breaking the surface. Hookups are rare but unforgettable.
Typical Day: Breakfast at the lodge → depart for flats (5-20 minute boat ride depending on conditions) → morning session (4 hours) → beach lunch → afternoon session → return to lodge. Some days may be all-day sessions to reach the most remote flats.
Day 8: Final Morning & Departure
Optional morning session for last shots at a trophy. Transfer to Cassidy International Airport. Depart with sore arms, sunburn, and memories of the world’s greatest bonefishing.
