Day 1: Arrive Port Sudan — Red Sea Welcome
Meet at Port Sudan Airport. Transfer to hotel. Explore the historic port city. Visit Aras Beach — the former Red Sea diving resort used as cover for Mossad operations to smuggle Ethiopian Jews in the 1980s. Orientation briefing. Traditional Sudanese dinner.
Day 2: Port Sudan → Meroe Pyramids
Morning flight to Khartoum. Drive 200km north through the Nubian Desert to Meroe. Arrive at the Royal Pyramids of Meroe — UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore over 40 steep-sided pyramids of Kushite kings and queens. Visit the Royal Baths and city ruins. Sunset at the pyramids with spectacular golden desert light. Camp near the pyramids under the stars.
Day 3: Meroe Pyramids at Sunrise → Naqa → Musawwarat
Sunrise at the pyramids. Drive to Naqa — see the Lion Temple dedicated to the god Apedemak featuring unique Kushite-Egyptian-Roman fusion art. The Roman-style kiosk showing cultural crossroads. Continue to Musawwarat es-Sufra — explore the Great Enclosure, one of the largest archaeological complexes in Nubia believed to be a pilgrimage site or elephant training center. Return to Meroe Camp.
Day 4: Meroe → Jebel Barkal
Drive north to Karima. Arrive at Jebel Barkal — the flat-topped sacred mountain rising dramatically from the desert that both Egyptians and Kushites believed was the home of the god Amun. Explore temples and pyramids at the mountain’s base. Visit the painted chambers of the Barkal pyramids. Climb partway up the mountain for panoramic desert views. Overnight in Karima.
Day 5: Nuri Pyramids → Old Dongola → Nubian Village
Morning visit to Nuri pyramids — over 60 pyramids including the tomb of Pharaoh Taharqa, the greatest of the Kushite rulers. See remarkably preserved painted tomb chambers. Drive to Old Dongola — the medieval capital of the Christian Nubian Kingdom of Makuria (6th-14th century). Explore Throne Hall ruins, churches with early Christian frescoes. Visit a traditional Nubian village along the Nile. Share tea with a Nubian family in their brilliantly painted mud-brick home. Overnight in Nubian guesthouse.
Day 6: Khartoum — Confluence & Omdurman Souq
Drive to Khartoum. Visit the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile — stand at the exact point where the two great rivers merge. Sudan National Museum housing rescued Nubian temples and Kushite artifacts. Afternoon in Omdurman — explore the sprawling Omdurman Souq (Africa’s greatest market for spices, gold, textiles, sword makers). Visit the Mahdi’s Tomb and Khalifa’s House Museum. Evening: attend a Sufi Dervish whirling ceremony at Hamed al-Nil Mosque — a mesmerizing spiritual experience. Farewell dinner at a riverside restaurant overlooking the Nile.
Day 7: Departure from Khartoum
Final morning along Nile Street waterfront. Last-minute shopping for Sudanese crafts and silver jewelry. Transfer to Khartoum International Airport.
