Day 1: Luanda to Lubango — Southern Gateway
Fly from Luanda’s 4 de Fevereiro Airport to Lubango’s Mukanka International Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon visit to the Tundavala Fissures — a dizzying 1,000-meter drop offering panoramic views over the southern plains. Briefing on the expedition.
Day 2: Lubango — Mumuila Tribal Encounter
Full day with the Mumuila (Mwila) tribe who live in the hills around Lubango. These semi-nomadic people maintain traditions largely unchanged for centuries. Learn about their pastoral lifestyle, marriage customs, and the elaborate hairstyling techniques using red clay (oncula) that make Mwila women instantly recognizable. Camp under the stars.
Day 3: Namibe — Serra da Leba & Virei
Drive the spectacular Serra da Leba pass — Angola’s most famous road with its series of hairpin bends descending from the highlands. Stop for photos at the viewpoint featured on Angola’s currency. Continue to Virei where prehistoric rock paintings provide a window into ancient human presence. Meet the Mucubal people, known for their distinctive traditional dress.
Day 4: Tombua — Cunene River Mouth & Desert Coast
Continue south through increasingly arid landscapes to Tombua on the Atlantic coast. Visit the Cunene River mouth where the Namib Desert meets the sea — a surreal landscape of pink dunes, flamingo-filled wetlands, and dolphin-filled waters. Camp under the desert stars.
Day 5: Iona National Park — Desert Wildlife
Full day in Iona National Park, Angola’s wilderness frontier. Search for oryx, springbok, zebra, ostrich, and the legendary desert-adapted elephants. Discover ancient Welwitschia plants, some over a millennium old. The stark beauty of this landscape is unforgettable.
Day 6: Return & Departure
