Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Luanda — Angola’s Vibrant Capital

Arrive at Luanda’s 4 de Fevereiro International Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation walk along the Marginal (waterfront promenade), passing the iconic Augustinho Neto Mausoleum — a striking example of Soviet-era brutalist architecture. Welcome dinner featuring Angolan specialties: muamba de galinha (chicken in palm oil stew) and funge (cassava porridge).

Day 2: Luanda City Discovery

Full-day exploration of Luanda: visit the Fortaleza de Sao Miguel — a 16th-century Portuguese fortress now housing the Museum of the Armed Forces with panoramic views over the bay. Explore the Baixa (lower town) with its Portuguese colonial architecture, the lively Benfica Market for crafts and textiles, and the Iron Palace (Palacio de Ferro) — allegedly designed by Gustave Eiffel. Visit the Slavery Museum to understand Angola’s complex history.

Day 3: Luanda to Kalandula — Journey to Africa’s Second Largest Falls

Drive inland to Kalandula (formerly Calandula) in Malanje province. The landscape transforms from coastal plains to the dramatic highlands of northern Angola. Overnight near the falls.

Day 4: Kalandula Falls & Pedras Negras

Morning at the magnificent Kalandula Falls — at 344 feet (105m) high and 400m wide, they are Africa’s second largest waterfalls by volume. The thunderous cascade creates permanent rainbows in the mist. Afternoon visit to Pedras Negras (Black Rocks) — mysterious megalithic formations rising from the savannah, sacred to local communities. Day 5: Kissama National Park — Wildlife Safari

Drive to Kissama (Quicama) National Park, Angola’s premier wildlife reserve just 70km south of Luanda. Afternoon game drive — the park was restocked through “Operation Noah’s Ark,” the largest animal translocation in history. Search for elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and the rare giant sable antelope — Angola’s national symbol.

Day 6: Luanda to Lubango — Southern Highlands

Fly from Luanda to Lubango, the capital of Huila province. Visit the Cristo Rei statue overlooking the city (modeled after Lisbon’s but smaller). Explore the Tundavala Fissures — a dramatic escarpment dropping 1,000 meters to the plains below, offering some of Angola’s most spectacular views.

Day 7: Lubango — Mwila Tribe & Serra da Leba

Visit a Mwila (Mumuila) tribal village near Lubango. The Mwila women are famous for their elaborate hairstyles coated with red clay (oncula) and intricate beadwork. Drive the legendary Serra da Leba mountain pass — one of Africa’s most photogenic roads, featured on Angola’s currency, with its famous hairpin bends descending the escarpment.

Day 8: Namibe Desert & Welwitschia Mirabilis

Journey to Namibe province where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis plants — living fossils that can survive over 1,500 years in the harshest desert conditions. Explore the Red Canyon’s colorful sandstone formations and desert landscapes. Afternoon at a pristine Atlantic beach.

Day 9: Departure from Lubango

Transfer to Lubango airport for departure.
