Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Cap-Haïtien — Arrival in the Historic North
Arrive at Cap-Haïtien Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation walk: the Place d’Armes, Notre-Dame Cathedral (one of the oldest in the Americas), and the colorful streets of the old colonial quarter. Welcome dinner of northern Haitian specialties — lambi (conch), tasso (spiced fried beef), and banane pesée (fried plantains).
Day 2: Citadelle Laferrière & Sans Souci Palace — Full Day
A full day dedicated to Haiti’s greatest treasures. Horseback ride to the Citadelle Laferrière — the largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere, built by 20,000 workers to defend the world’s first Black republic. Extensive exploration (2+ hours): the cannon batteries, the cisterns, the powder magazines, and the breathtaking views from every angle. Descend to Sans Souci Palace, King Henri Christophe’s ambitious palace complex. Despite earthquake damage, the grand staircase, formal gardens, and scale convey the ambition of this revolutionary king. Lunch in Milot. Return to Cap-Haïtien.
Day 3: Fort Liberté & Fort Dauphin
Day trip east along the coast to Fort Liberté, a beautifully preserved colonial town with a stunning natural bay. Visit Fort Dauphin, a massive Spanish fortress originally built in 1730, commanding the entrance to the bay. The fortress walls, barracks, and powder rooms are remarkably intact. Afternoon: visit the small fishing villages along the coast. Fresh seafood lunch — lobster and fish caught that morning. Swim at a secluded beach en route back to Cap-Haïtien.
Day 4: Île à Rat & Northern Islands
Full-day boat excursion to Île à Rat, a pristine island off the northern coast. White sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and excellent snorkeling on shallow coral reefs teeming with tropical fish. Fresh seafood barbecue on the beach. Afternoon: explore nearby cays and mangrove channels. Return to Cap-Haïtien for sunset. Evening free to explore the city’s nightlife.
Day 5: Northern Art & Culture Immersion
Morning visit to a local metal art workshop — Haiti’s fer découpé (cut metal) art is world-renowned. Artists transform recycled oil drums into intricate wall panels, sculptures, and decorative pieces. Try your hand at the basic techniques. Afternoon: visit the Lakou Soukri Danach, a Vodou cultural center and one of Haiti’s most important spiritual sites. Learn about Vodou’s role in Haitian culture and independence (the 1791 ceremony at Bois Caïman that launched the revolution was conducted by a Vodou priest). Evening: farewell dinner with traditional northern Haitian music and dance performance.
Day 6: Labadee Beach & Departure
Morning at Labadee Beach — a stunning crescent of white sand framed by mountains. Swim, snorkel, or simply relax. This area was once a Taíno settlement and the site of early European contact. Fresh seafood lunch overlooking the bay. Transfer to Cap-Haïtien Airport for departure.
