Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Port-au-Prince — Arrival
Arrive at Toussaint Louverture International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Pétion-Ville, the upscale hillside suburb overlooking the capital. Afternoon orientation: brief city tour of Port-au-Prince — the Champs de Mars (with statues of Haiti’s founding fathers), the National Palace ruins, and the vibrant Iron Market (Marché en Fer). Welcome dinner with live Haitian music — kompa rhythms, the national musical style.
Day 2: Port-au-Prince — Art, History & Resilience
Full day discovering Haiti’s capital. Morning: Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien (MUPANAH), housing the anchor of the Santa Maria, the pistol with which King Christophe took his own life, and artifacts from the revolutionary period. Visit the Atis Rezistans sculpture collective in Grand Rue — artists create powerful works from recycled materials in one of the world’s most unique art scenes. Afternoon: drive up to Kenscoff and Furcy in the mountains above Port-au-Prince. The temperature drops, the air clears, and the views stretch to the sea. Visit a coffee plantation and the Baptist Mission lookout. Overnight in Pétion-Ville.
Day 3: Jacmel — The Artistic Heart of Haiti
Drive south to Jacmel (approx. 3 hours through dramatic mountain scenery). This beautifully preserved 19th-century port city is Haiti’s cultural capital. Its French colonial architecture with wrought-iron balconies rivals New Orleans’ French Quarter. Walk through the historic center, visit the papier-mâché workshops where Jacmel’s famous Carnival masks are made, and explore the art galleries. Afternoon at Jacmel Beach — golden sand and palm trees. Watch the sunset over the Caribbean. Overnight in Jacmel.
Day 4: Bassin Bleu — Tropical Paradise
Morning drive into the hills to Bassin Bleu. Hike through lush tropical forest to reach these spectacular blue pools. The main pool, Bassin Clair, is 22m deep with water the color of sapphires. Swim, jump from the rocks, and let the waterfall massage your shoulders. Afternoon: visit a local cocoa plantation — Haiti produces some of the finest cocoa in the Caribbean for export chocolate. Learn about fermentation, drying, and traditional chocolate-making. Return to Jacmel for a relaxed evening.
Day 5: Jacmel to Port-au-Prince — Coastal Route
Morning in Jacmel: visit the Iron Market (Marché de Fer de Jacmel), one of Haiti’s most beautiful markets, and the Manoir Alexandra, a restored 19th-century mansion. Afternoon drive back to Port-au-Prince via the coastal road. Stop at the Parc de Martissant for a nature walk in the city’s best-preserved green space. Evening: explore Pétion-Ville’s restaurants and bars. Overnight in Port-au-Prince.
Day 6: Fly to Cap-Haïtien — Northern History
Morning flight to Cap-Haïtien (30 minutes). This short hop saves a 6-hour drive over mountain roads. Afternoon city tour: the 18th-century cathedral, the colonial streets of the old town, and the bustling port area. Visit the local market for handicrafts and Haitian vanilla (among the world’s best). Evening dinner at a restaurant overlooking the bay. Overnight in Cap-Haïtien.
Day 7: Citadelle Laferrière & Sans Souci
The grand finale. Horseback ride up to the Citadelle — the largest fortress in the Americas. Full exploration of this UNESCO World Heritage site with your expert guide. Descend to Sans Souci Palace for a walk through King Christophe’s Versailles-like residence. Afternoon at leisure in Milot village. Farewell dinner in Cap-Haïtien with a traditional Rara music performance if available.
Day 8: Cap-Haïtien — Last Morning & Departure
Morning visit to Labadee Beach — turquoise water, white sand, and views of the mountains meeting the sea. Final Haitian lunch, then transfer to Cap-Haïtien Airport for departure. You’ve traversed Haiti from south to north, experiencing its art, history, cuisine, natural wonders, and the incredible spirit of its people.
