Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Niamey — Gateway to the Sahara

Arrive at Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger’s capital on the banks of the Niger River. After visa formalities and customs, transfer to your hotel. Evening organizational meeting with your expedition leader — route briefing, vehicle assignments, and introductions to your Tuareg guides. Welcome dinner featuring West African cuisine at a restaurant overlooking the Niger River.

Day 2: Niamey to Agadez — Flight to the Desert Frontier

Morning flight from Niamey to Agadez, the legendary Sahara trading city and UNESCO World Heritage site. Afternoon exploration of Agadez’s famous market — a crossroads of the Sahara where Tuareg, Fulani, and Hausa traders converge. Visit the Grand Mosque of Agadez with its distinctive 27m mud-brick minaret (the tallest mud structure in the world), dating from 1515. Climb the minaret for panoramic views across the Sahara. Evening preparation for the desert expedition.

Day 3: Agadez to Timia — Aïr Massif Oasis

Depart Agadez in 4WD vehicles, entering the Aïr Massif — a mountainous region rising from the Sahara with peaks over 2,000m. Stop at the Oudaras oasis. Arrive at Timia, a lush oasis town with guelta (permanent water pools), date palm groves, and citrus orchards. Visit the Timia waterfall (seasonal) and explore the surrounding pre-Cambrian rock formations — some over 600 million years old. Meet the local Tuareg community and learn about oasis agriculture. Camp near Timia.

Day 4: Timia to Kogo Arakao — Ancient Capital of the Sultanate

Continue through the Aïr Massif to the archaeological site of Assodé, the 18th-century capital of the Tuareg Sultanate of Aïr. Explore the ruins of this once-powerful desert kingdom. Continue to Kogo Arakao, a surreal landscape of blue marble formations — enormous boulders of deep blue-grey marble weathered into fantastic shapes by millennia of wind erosion. This UNESCO-listed geological wonder is one of the Sahara’s most photogenic locations. Camp in the desert.

Day 5: Anakom — Neolithic Rock Art

Trek through the volcanic landscape of Arakao to discover Neolithic rock engravings dating back 8,000 years. These petroglyphs — depicting giraffes, elephants, ostriches, and cattle — testify to a time when the Sahara was a green savanna. The contrast between the ancient depictions of wildlife and today’s desert landscape is profound. Continue exploring the volcanic “cathedral” formations and sand dunes of Issawan. Camp under the Sahara’s incomparable starry sky.

Day 6-7: Adrar Madet to Dirkou — Ténéré Desert Crossing

Two days crossing the legendary Ténéré Desert, one of the most remote regions on Earth. This vast sand sea stretches for hundreds of kilometers — a landscape of golden dunes, gravel plains, and infinite horizons. Stop at the ancient well of Achegour, a vital water source on the trans-Saharan trade routes for over a thousand years. Arrive at Dirkou, a historic oasis town that served as a major stop on the camel caravan routes transporting salt from Bilma to markets across West Africa. Rest and resupply.

Day 8: Aney — Salt Caravans & Fortress Ruins

Visit the ruins of Djado and Djaba, ancient fortified settlements (ksour) that once guarded the trans-Saharan trade routes. These UNESCO-listed ruins — built of mud-brick and salt — rise from the desert like ghost towns. The nearby salt mines have been worked for centuries, and you may encounter camel caravans still transporting salt slabs across the desert. Meet the Kanuri people who maintain this ancient tradition. Camp in the Ténéré.

Day 9-10: Bilma to Fachi — Salt & Oasis Culture

Arrive at Bilma, the most famous of the Sahara’s salt oases. For over a thousand years, Bilma’s salt pans have produced salt slabs traded across West Africa. Watch the traditional salt-cutting process — men standing in the briny water, cutting perfect rectangular slabs by hand. Continue to Fachi, a picturesque oasis with its imposing ksar (fortified granary) rising from the palm groves. Meet the local Tubu and Kanuri communities. The contrast of verdant date palms against the golden desert is stunning.

Day 11-12: Ténéré Crossing to Agadez

Two days crossing over 250km of the Ténéré Desert back towards the Aïr Massif. This is expedition travel at its purest — long driving days through ever-changing desert landscapes, from erg (sand sea) to reg (gravel plain) to hamada (rocky plateau). Camp in the pristine desert, far from any light pollution — the Milky Way stretches horizon to horizon. Arrive back in Agadez on Day 12 for the first hot shower and proper bed in over a week.

Day 13: Kel Gress & Ufagadod Valley

Day excursion from Agadez to the Kel Gress region and Ufagadod Valley. Visit Tuareg nomadic encampments to learn about their traditional lifestyle — camel herding, leather work, silver jewelry, and the famous indigo-dyed tagelmust (turban). The Tuareg, known as the “Blue Men of the Sahara,” are among the world’s most iconic nomadic cultures. Afternoon return to Agadez for souvenir shopping at the artisan market. Farewell dinner.

Day 14: Agadez to Niamey — Return to Civilization

Morning flight from Agadez to Niamey. Afternoon exploration of the capital: the Grand Mosque of Niamey, the National Museum of Niger (with its excellent exhibits on Tuareg, Fulani, and Hausa cultures), and the bustling Grand Marché. Optional visit to see hippos on the Niger River at sunset. Final farewell dinner at a restaurant overlooking the river.

Day 15: Niamey — Departure

Morning visit to the artisan village for last-minute Tuareg silver jewelry, leather goods, and Sahara crafts. Transfer to the airport for departure. Take home memories of the Ténéré’s endless dunes, ancient salt caravans, Neolithic rock art, and the warm hospitality of the Sahara’s people.
