Day 1: Arrive Dhaka — The River City

Arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Dhaka is fundamentally a river city — born on the banks of the Buriganga, shaped by the rivers that surround it. Afternoon visit to Sadarghat, the city’s magnificent river port. This is the soul of Dhaka: hundreds of wooden passenger launches painted in bright colors, three or four stories high, preparing for their overnight journeys to Barisal, Khulna, and beyond. Porters carrying impossible loads on their heads, families settling into cabins, tea stalls doing brisk business — Sadarghat is humanity in motion. Hop aboard a small boat for an introductory cruise on the Buriganga, watching Dhaka’s chaotic riverfront slide past: brick kilns, ship-breaking yards, old merchant houses, and modern high-rises. Day 2: Sonargaon & Buriganga River Cruise to Chandpur

Morning visit to Sonargaon (27 km from Dhaka), the ancient capital of Bengal from the 13th to 17th centuries. Explore the Folk Arts & Crafts Museum in the restored Sardar Bari mansion, showcasing Bangladesh’s extraordinary craft heritage. Walk through the haunting Panam Nagar — 52 abandoned 19th-century merchant mansions lining a single street, their ornate facades slowly crumbling, telling silent stories of the wealthy Hindu merchants who fled during Partition. Visit the elegant Goaldi Mosque (1519), a pre-Mughal gem with graceful proportions. Afternoon: the highlight — board your private chartered boat at Sadarghat for the river cruise down the Buriganga to Chandpur. As Dhaka recedes, the river widens and the landscape transforms. Watch river dolphins surface in the distance, fishermen cast circular nets from small wooden boats, and the golden light of the Bengal sunset paints the water. The confluence of the Padma, Meghna, and Jamuna rivers near Chandpur creates a vast inland “sea” — one of Earth’s great river confluences. Arrive Chandpur by evening. Overnight at Chandpur hotel.

Day 3: Mainamati — 8th-Century Buddhist Ruins

Morning drive to Mainamati (2 hours), one of Bangladesh’s most important Buddhist archaeological sites. This sprawling complex of over 50 ancient Buddhist settlements dates from the 8th to 12th centuries, when this region was a major center of Buddhist learning. Visit the Salban Vihara, a large monastery complex with 115 cells arranged around a central temple — remarkably well-preserved and excavated. Explore the Mainamati Museum, housing an extraordinary collection of artifacts: delicate bronze sculptures, terracotta plaques, gold and silver coins, and the famous miniature bronze Buddhist stupas found throughout the site. The Kotila Mura, a unique arrangement of three stupas representing the Buddhist Trinity (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), sits on a hilltop with commanding views. This under-visited archaeological zone reveals the profound Buddhist heritage of ancient Bengal. Overnight at Comilla hotel.

Day 4: Comilla & Return to Dhaka

Morning exploration of Comilla, one of Bangladesh’s oldest cities. Visit the Comilla War Cemetery — a beautifully maintained Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery containing 736 graves of soldiers from the Second World War, a serene and moving place. Visit the Rani Bhabani Palace in the Comilla countryside, an 18th-century zamindari estate. Explore the Shalban Bihar area and any remaining Mainamati ruins you haven’t visited. Afternoon drive back to Dhaka (3 hours), crossing the Meghna River on the immense Meghna Bridge — the river here is over 5 km wide during the monsoon, essentially an inland sea. Evening free time for last exploration of Dhaka or souvenir shopping for Bengali handicrafts. Farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant featuring a full Bengali feast: fish curry, dal, vegetable dishes, and sweets. Overnight at Dhaka hotel.

Day 5: Depart Dhaka

Morning visit to a riverside market to witness the morning trade — fresh fish straight from the river, vegetables arriving by country boat, the eternal rhythm of river life that has sustained Bengal for millennia. Transfer to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for departure. The rivers of Bangladesh, which carried you from ancient capitals to Buddhist ruins, will call you back — for in this land of water, the journey is always the destination.
