Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Accra
Arrival and transfer to your hotel. Evening visit to Labadi Beach for a welcome sunset and live reggae beats. Overnight in Accra.
Day 2: Accra to Ho — Volta Region
Drive east into the Volta Region, Ghana’s most scenic area. Stop at Shai Hills Resource Reserve for a mini-safari: spot baboons, kob antelopes, and over 170 bird species. Climb the observation hill for panoramic views. Continue to Ho, the Volta regional capital. Evening at the Ho market. Overnight in Ho.
Day 3: Wli Waterfalls & Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary
Hike to Wli Waterfalls — the highest waterfall in West Africa, cascading from 80 meters in two tiers. Swim in the refreshing pool. Afternoon at Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, a community-run conservation area where sacred Mona monkeys live in harmony with villagers — they’ll eat bananas right from your hand. Overnight in Hohoe.
Day 4: Mount Afadjato & Kente Weaving
Morning climb to Mount Afadjato — Ghana’s highest peak at 885 meters. Panoramic views over the Volta Lake and Togo border from the summit. Descend through cocoa farms to Agbozume, the Kente weaving center of the Ewe people. Learn Ewe-style Kente patterns distinct from Ashanti designs. Overnight in Ho.
Day 5: Journey North to Tamale
Long drive north through changing landscapes — from rainforest to savannah. Cross the Volta Lake at Yeji. Arrive in Tamale, the capital of Ghana’s Northern Region. Evening visit to the Central Mosque and bustling market. Overnight in Tamale.
Day 6: Mole National Park — Full Safari
Full day on safari in Mole National Park, Ghana’s largest wildlife reserve. Morning walking safari with armed rangers — approach elephants on foot, an experience unique to West Africa. Spot warthogs, waterbucks, baboons, and over 300 bird species including Abyssinian rollers and martial eagles. Afternoon game drive to the park’s waterholes where elephants gather at sunset. Overnight at Mole Motel overlooking the waterhole.
Day 7: Larabanga Mosque & Mognori Eco-Village
Visit Larabanga Mosque — Ghana’s oldest mosque, dating from 1421, built in the distinctive Sudano-Sahelian style. It’s known as the “Mecca of West Africa.” Afternoon at Mognori Eco-Village for a traditional canoe safari and visit to the local shea butter processing center. Learn to make shea butter the traditional way. Overnight in Tamale.
Day 8: Ancient Mossi Kingdoms & Bolgatanga
Drive to Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region. Visit the Tongo Hills and the Tengzug Shrine — an ancient animist oracle site with ritual drums and sacrificial stones. Afternoon at Bolgatanga Market, famous for handwoven straw baskets (Bolga baskets). Visit a basket weaving cooperative. Overnight in Bolgatanga.
Day 9: Paga Crocodile Pond & Return to Accra
Visit Paga Crocodile Pond — a sacred pool where locals have lived alongside Nile crocodiles for centuries. The crocodiles are considered protectors and are so tame you can touch them (with a guide!). Fly back to Accra from Tamale. Farewell dinner with live highlife music. Overnight in Accra.
Day 10: Depart Accra
Morning visit to the Arts Centre for last-minute shopping. Transfer to the airport. Safe travels!
