Rwanda: 3-Day Ultimate Gorilla Trekking — Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda: 3-Day Ultimate Gorilla Trekking — Volcanoes National Park

Immerse yourself in one of Africa’s most transformative wildlife encounters — standing mere meters from a family of mountain gorillas in the misty forests of Volcanoes National Park. Rwanda’s gorilla trekking is a bucket-list experience: trek through dense bamboo forest on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, led by expert trackers who have spent decades studying these magnificent primates. The park is home to over 600 mountain gorillas — roughly half the world’s remaining population — across 12 habituated gorilla families. This 3-day itinerary is designed for travelers who want the maximum gorilla experience in minimum time, wrapped in comfort and efficiency.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali — Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your guide and driver. Brief Kigali orientation tour, visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial — a moving tribute that showcases Rwanda’s remarkable journey of reconciliation and rebirth. Then embark on the scenic 2.5-hour drive north through the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” past terraced hillsides and villages. Arrive at your lodge near Volcanoes National Park in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at your mountain lodge.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day — The Encounter of a Lifetime
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi by 7:00 AM for the mandatory pre-trek briefing. You’ll be assigned to one of 12 habituated gorilla families, each with its own personality — from the Susa group (once studied by Dian Fossey) to the playful Umubano family. Trek duration varies from 1 to 4 hours depending on gorilla movements, through montane forest at altitudes of 2,500–3,000m. Porters are available to carry your daypack (highly recommended). The one-hour encounter with the gorillas is an experience beyond words — watch silverbacks display dominance, juveniles tumble playfully, and mothers tenderly care for their infants. Trek back, enjoy lunch at your lodge, and spend the afternoon relaxing or visiting the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for traditional dance performances. Dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trek — Kigali Departure
Optional morning golden monkey trek in the bamboo zone of Volcanoes National Park (supplement required). These acrobatic primates with golden-orange backs are endemic to the Virunga massif and provide a completely different wildlife experience. After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch before the scenic drive back to Kigali. Transfer to the airport for your evening departure flight, carrying memories of one of the greatest wildlife encounters on Earth.
