Corsica: 8-Day Mountains & Coast Hiking — Mediterranean Island Adventure
Corsica — the “Island of Beauty” — is the Mediterranean’s most dramatic and unspoiled island. A mountainous granite fortress rising from the sea, Corsica packs more geographical diversity into one island than most countries: 2,000-meter peaks dusted with snow, fragrant maquis scrubland, medieval hilltop villages, and over 1,000 km of coastline with some of Europe’s cleanest waters. This 8-day guided hiking tour traverses Corsica’s most spectacular landscapes, from the legendary GR20 trail to the dramatic coastal paths of the Calanques de Piana (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Ajaccio — Napoleon’s Birthplace
Arrive at Ajaccio Napoléon Bonaparte Airport. Transfer to your hotel in the capital city, founded by the Genoese in 1492. Afternoon walking tour of Ajaccio’s old town — visit the Maison Bonaparte, Napoleon’s birthplace (now a national museum), and the Baroque Ajaccio Cathedral where he was baptized. Stroll the palm-lined waterfront. Welcome dinner featuring Corsican specialties: figatellu (smoked liver sausage), brocciu cheese, and chestnut flour cake. Overnight in Ajaccio.
Day 2: Calanques de Piana — UNESCO Coastal Hiking
Drive north to the Gulf of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today’s hike follows the dramatic coastal path through the Calanques de Piana — a surreal landscape of towering red granite pinnacles, sculpted by wind and sea into fantastical shapes, plunging into the turquoise Mediterranean. The 4-5 hour hike offers constantly changing perspectives of these rock formations (known locally as “tafoni”) and panoramic views over the Gulf of Porto and the Scandola Nature Reserve. Packed lunch with views. Afternoon swim at a secluded cove accessible only by foot. Transfer to your hotel in Porto. Overnight.
Day 3: Spelunca Gorge & Girolata
Morning hike through the Gorges de Spelunca, a dramatic river canyon connecting the villages of Ota and Évisa. The trail follows an ancient Genoese mule path, crossing a 14th-century arched stone bridge over deep pools where you can swim. After lunch, take a boat from Porto to Girolata, a tiny fishing village accessible only by sea or foot, nestled in a deep bay within the Scandola Nature Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage marine reserve. Spot ospreys diving for fish. Afternoon free for swimming, exploring the Genoese watchtower, or simply soaking in the remote beauty. Boat return to Porto. Overnight.
Day 4: Corte & Restonica Valley
Transfer inland to Corte, Corsica’s historic capital and the heart of the island’s independence movement. The dramatic citadel, perched on a rocky spur above the confluence of the Tavignano and Restonica rivers, has been Corsica’s symbolic center since Pascal Paoli founded the Corsican Republic here in 1755. Visit the Museum of Corsica for a deep dive into island history and culture. Afternoon hike into the Restonica Valley, ascending through pine forests to the Bergeries de Grotelle, where shepherds still produce cheese in summer. Swim in natural rock pools carved into the granite. Overnight in Corte.
Day 5: GR20 — The Northern Trail
Today you tackle a section of the legendary GR20, regarded as Europe’s toughest long-distance hiking trail. The northern section (Haute Route) is the most dramatic, crossing high alpine terrain with knife-edge ridges, glacial lakes, and granite peaks. Your guided section covers approximately 15 km through the ascent to Lac de Nino, one of Corsica’s highest lakes at 1,743 meters — a mirror-like tarn surrounded by pozzines (natural grass-covered hummocks that float on the water). Wild horses roam freely here, and the views stretch across the entire island, from sea to sea. This is hiking at its purest. Overnight in a mountain refuge or return to Corte.
Day 6: Bonifacio — Cliffs & Coves
Drive south to Bonifacio, Corsica’s most spectacular town, dramatically perched atop 70-meter white limestone cliffs at the island’s southern tip. Wander the medieval citadel’s narrow streets, visit the 13th-century Escalier du Roi d’Aragon — 187 steps carved into the cliff face leading to a freshwater well at sea level. Take a boat tour into the sea caves beneath the cliffs, including the famous Grotte du Sdragonato with its ceiling opening shaped like Corsica. Afternoon hike along the clifftop path to the Phare de Pertusato, Corsica’s southernmost point. On clear days, you can see Sardinia (Italy), just 12 km across the Strait of Bonifacio. Overnight in Bonifacio.
Day 7: Bavella Needles — The “Corsican Dolomites”
Final hiking day in the Aiguilles de Bavella (Bavella Needles), a spectacular mountain cirque of jagged granite spires often called the “Corsican Dolomites.” Hike to the Trou de la Bombe — a natural arch carved through a rock spire at 1,483 meters, with stupendous views over both coasts of Corsica. The 4-hour hike winds through ancient Laricio pine forests (the Corsican pine grows nowhere else naturally) and across granite slabs polished by glaciers. Farewell dinner in a mountain auberge featuring wild boar stew (civet de sanglier) and chestnut polenta. Overnight near Bavella or return to Porto-Vecchio.
Day 8: Departure — Figari or Bastia
After breakfast, transfer to Figari Airport (south) or Bastia Airport (north) depending on your flight. Depart with memories of granite peaks, turquoise coves, and one of Europe’s wildest and most beautiful islands.
